Welcome to Year 1 Meet The Teacher Literacy – Creative Writing

Writing Spelling Handwriting and Presentation Composition Vocabulary, grammar & punctuation

Year 1 Writing expectations • Write sentences that start with a capital letter and end with a full stop • Use ‘and’ to join ideas • In writing, show evidence of full stops, question marks or exclamation marks • Use capital letters for names of people, places and days of the week, and the personal pronoun ‘I’ • Write clearly sequenced sentences • Correct formation of capital and lower case – starting and finishing in the right place • Correct formation of digits Spelling • Words using Phase 5 phonemes • Tricky words from Phase 4 and Phase 5 Some of the expectations for the and of Year 1 (to achieve the expected standard for Year 1)

Cursive Handwriting We began cursive writing at Blossomfield in November. In Year 1 we introduce the letters of the alphabet- modelling the sweep up from the line and a flick Then we practise joining the phonemes that we have for spelling practice each week We also practise writing sentences with these phonemes in. The children are encouraged to use sweeps and flicks and join their writing in their class work. Example of cursive writing

Creative Writing What Is Creative Writing? In Year 1 creative writing is about encouraging the children to use adjectives, sentence starters and begin to use connectives within their writing. The skills of creative writing can be used in a variety of genres such as; poetry, recounts, stories, instructions etc.

Our aim this morning is to show you how we use the Pie Corbett method to assist when writing. Pie Corbett is an expert in creative writing - more information about how he encourages children to write, can be found on the internet www.talk4writing.co.uk/ Although we have said this method can be used to write a range of texts, today we are going to show you how to use his method to build up a story with children who are at different levels of writing. Talk for Writing enables children to imitate the key language they need for a particular topic orally before they try reading and analysing it. Through fun activities that help them rehearse the tune of the language they need, followed by shared writing to show them how to craft their writing, children are helped to write in the same style. Schools that have adopted the approach have not only increased their children’s progress but have found that children and teachers alike love it. It n
