ACCU ANNUAL MEETING Student Life at the China Institute January 28, 2017

THE CHINA INSTITUTE Overview Established in 2012. Located in Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP) in Jiangsu Province, one of the most economically prosperous provinces in China. One of 26 international universities located in SIP. 20 corporate partners (and counting). 15 Chinese institutional partners (and counting). 68,000 square-foot academic facility featuring state-of-the-art classrooms, science and engineering laboratories, project spaces, conference rooms and offices. Features the only standalone American Culture Center sponsored by the U.S. Embassy in Beijing in the country, which opened on December 2, 2014.

SUZHOU INDUSTRIAL PARK One of the world’s fastest growing innovation parks. Went from farmland to a fully-formed planned city in just 25 years. Home to one-third of the world’s Fortunate 500 companies. Conveniently located just 25 minutes from Shanghai by the bullet train. Situated right outside the 2,500 year-old ancient Chinese city of Suzhou, giving students a unique perspective on ancient and modern China. SIP Today

ACADEMIC PROGRAMS Fall/Spring Semester Programs Intersession Programs 14 weeks. August to November; January to April. Two mid-term breaks. 12-18 credit hours. Experiential Learning opportunities. Summer Program 6 weeks. Early May to late June. 6-9 credit hours. Intersession Programs 2 weeks. Early January. 3 credit hours. Specialized upper-level course. Courses Program open to all majors and academic years. All courses taught in English. Arts, business, engineering, humanities, natural sciences and social sciences

BENEFITS FOR STUDENTS Students earn credits towards their home institution’s degree (simplified credit transfer process – American institution to American institution). Intercultural learning opportunity through historical/cultural site visits, intercultural dialogue and community living. Affordable program cost structure, making education abroad accessible to more students. Opportunities for experiential learning during semester programs. Students build their résumé with a comprehensive international opportunity that gives them hands-on experience in the global workplace. Staff members coordinate all details, from flights and visas to accommodations and course registration, making the education experience easier for students to prepare for an less worrisome for parents/families.

BRINGING LIFE TO STUDENT LIFE The University of Dayton has established a comprehensive student and residential life experience with the goal of educating the whole person in the Catholic and Marianist tradition. MAKING IT REAL Supervision of the Director of Student Life position at the China Institute; Adaptation of existing University of Dayton policies for the China Institute within an international residential environment; Adaptation of a residential curriculum for the China Institute; Communication; Creating an international experience, while offering a supportive environment that is characteristic of the University of Dayton and Catholic higher education.

EXPERIENCES BEYOND THE CLASSROOM Co-curricular, experiential-based learning; Adaptation of residential curriculum for China; Considers diverse, intercultural population.

ON-SITE ORIENTATION Scheduled excursions throughout the program; Local places of interest, nearby amenities, student life resources, etc.; Transportation around the city; The China Institute facility.
