The Joy of Jerunds Oops…I mean Gerunds! 

Gerunds Gerunds are VERBS ending in “ing” that act like NOUNS What? Verbs that act like nouns…for example Dance would become ____?

We began with dancing. Dancing is the object of the preposition Dancing is fun. Dancing is the subject. Get it?

Gerunds can also be… Direct objects!! (Yes, they’re back.) What are the rules for DO’s? Follow an ACTION verb and receive the action of the verb I love dancing! OR…

The Dreaded Predicate Nominative! My grandparents’ favorite activity is dancing. Whew…so to recap:

Gerunds are verbs ending in ING that act like NOUNS and can be one of the following jobs:

Can you name the 5 jobs of nouns? Subjects Direct objects Indirect objects Objects of prepositions Predicate Nominatives

So…name that gerund (and its function). I tried swimming, but I almost drowned. Learning is great! We were tired after hiking. The best hobby is cooking. I gave running some effort, but I quit. NOTE…what will be the PROBLEM with GERUNDS?

Gerund phrases These are made up of the gerund plus any modifiers or complements that go w/it Gerund phrases can function exactly like gerunds Yes, they can be S/IO/DO/OP/PN Bleah. Bleah is not a gerund.

For example, Laughing with my friends is the best way to spend the day. I truly enjoy shopping at Bloomingdales. You won’t get away with bringing your dog to school. The way to win is beating the other team.

Is your brain fried yet? Well, at least you’re not a cow.

QUIZ TIME! Working hard is often its own reward. My mother always enjoys driving down exciting roads. I know people who are obsessed with eating all the time. Stumbling in the dark is not my idea of an interesting activity. It seems that his favorite thing is sleeping.
