Gifted Services Information Night November 7, 2016

Who is “Gifted” in Ohio? Gifted students are defined in the Ohio revised Code (3324.01) as those who perform or show potential for performing at remarkably high levels of accomplishment when compared to others of their age, experience or environment. We identify giftedness using state approved tests and state approved identification cut scores.

There are many ways in which we serve gifted students in Aurora.

Gr. 2-5 Gifted Cluster Grouping Regular Classroom with Cluster Grouping Superior Cognitive identified students are deliberately placed in classes with a teacher who has received professional development in meeting the needs of gifted learners. Differentiated instruction for clustered students is delivered by the regular classroom teacher. Criteria: A gifted qualifying superior cognitive composite score on a state approved gifted test

3rd Grade Enrichment Meet daily after lunch during WIN time (no curriculum missed) Focus on convergent (logical deduction) and divergent (creative) thinking skills Social and emotional emphasis on giftedness as thinking differently, not smarter than others

Gifted Math Plus Gr. 4 & 5 Criteria: State gifted qualifying superior cognitive composite score on a gr. 3 & above state approved gifted test The curriculum covers on grade math curriculum supplemented by a variety of challenging materials. Students are not accelerated by grade level curriculum Pace is determined by the class Class is differentiated to meet a variety of skill levels through a guided math approach Meeting the social and emotional needs

Gifted Art Students is identified as gifted in art based on a state approved portfolio assessment The district art departments serves on the assessment committee, assessment takes place in the spring Students are nominated by their teachers and then the student creates a portfolio of 5 pieces Student’s gifted art needs are met through a differentiated art instruction delivered by the art teacher

Gr. 6-7 Gifted Language Arts Criteria: State qualifying superior cognitive composite score on a gr. 3 & above state approved gifted test Teacher: Mrs. Jimenez Gifted Language Arts Grades 6-7 Class made up of superior cognitive students Middle school language arts core curriculum is taught at an accelerated pace Students are not accelerated to the next year’s language arts curriculum; they are enriched with more challenging material at the current grade level. Students analyze the elements of classic and contemporary young adult novels with age-appropriate themes through literature circles. There is an emphasis on English grammar and usage rules for effective written work (i.e., essays, journals, and commentaries).

Gr. 6-8 Gifted Math Criteria: 95th percentile or above on the Iowa Test of Basic Skills Math section or a Teacher: Mrs. McMahon Gifted Accelerated Math Grades 6 By the end of the course, the students will have covered the core Ohio 6-8th Grade Mathematics indicators and benchmarks. Students will take the 7th grade PARCC Assessment. Students need the math teacher’s recommendation to qualify for the next level of gifted math. Gifted Accelerated Math Grade 7 Honors Integrated Math 1 The course curriculum covers the Ohio 9th Grade Mathematics indicators and benchmarks. The course follows a constructivist integrated approach to mathematics with a strong focus on linear and nonlinear functions and relationships. Students will take the Integrated Math 1 End of Course Exam. Students receive High School Credit for this course. Gifted Accelerated Math Grade 8 Honors Integrated Math 2 The course curriculum covers the Ohio 10th Grade Mathematics indicators and benchmarks. The course follows a constructivist integrated approach to mathematics with a strong focus on geometry, trigonometric relationships and matrices. At the end of the course, students will be prepared to enter the high school at the 11th grade level of integrated mathematics. Students will take the Integrated Math 2 End of Course Exam.

Written Education Plans Not an IEP (not a legal document) Written Education Plan (WEP) Communication tool Identifies student’s area of giftedness Record of gifted services delivery options Staff responsible for delivering services Student goals are individual and created by the classroom teacher with your child’s needs in mind Progress is monitored through classroom pre and post assessments Progress is reported using the district’s PIV and quarterly report cards WEPs are created annually and shared with parents in the fall Any student who is served is required to have a written education plan.
