Reference You can refer to a reference work A reference work is not meant to be read through from cover to cover, only consulted for certain information or facts A reference work may have an array of unrelated entries, which are generally alphabetically arranged Reference works are expected to be in the library at all times Meyer

Let’s look at some examples of reference works! Meyer

Dictionary A reference source containing alphabetically-arranged words along with information about their meanings, pronunciations, functions, etymologies, etc. Meyer

Thesaurus A reference source with alphabetically-arranged words and their synonyms and antonyms Meyer

Encyclopedia A reference source that contains information on all branches of knowledge usually in alphabetically-arranged articles A comprehensive reference source about a particular branch of knowledge in alphabetically-arranged articles for example, Wildlife Encyclopedia, Medical and Health Encyclopedia Meyer

Almanac A reference source that is published annually containing statistical, tabular, and general information on many different topics for example, Presidents of the US, crime rates, Oscar winners, and other quick-reference questions Annual publication containing astronomical and meteorological data for a given year (along with other information)  Farmer’s Almanac for example, average temperatures Meyer

Atlas A reference source that is a bound collection of maps, informative tables, and other related illustrations and textual matter Meyer
