Essay Planning Where does Chris start and end his journey? Atlanta, Georgia to Denali National Park in Alaska How is Chris’ journey significant? (Characterization) It impacts both his own life, as well as the lives of others Chris achieves both a new appreciation of independence and a spiritual awakening in his travels. Chris’ journey impacts his role as both a son and as a friend. How does Chris’ journey connect to a larger thematic idea? Journeys transform both the traveler and the people he or she meets along the way. It’s only in taking in new experiences that we discover who we really are and what we are made of.

Odyssey Leader Paragraph Along Odysseus’ arduous journey home to Ithaca, he encounters several obstacles that evolve him into a more effective leader. After defeating the Trojans during the war, many would expect the victorious men to head back home, but instead Odysseus directs his men to the land of the Ciconces, “allies of the Trojans.” He hopes to further humiliate the enemy by obliterating their allies. Instead of an easy victory, the Cicones fight back and kill “72 of Odysseus’ men” and then drive them back “out to sea.” Not only does Odysseus’ mission fail, but as a leader, he intentionally chose a path that put his men in harm’s way. His own arrogance in his abilities as a leader and warrior cost many their lives, and it also served to hurt their reputation as fierce warriors. Nevertheless, Odysseus does not let this misstep deter him from learning from his failure. Upon reaching the next island, he takes a new approach. He allows “two picked men and a runner” to travel to the island to scope out what type of men live there. He could have charged straight in and relied upon his brute strength again to make an impression; however, with the last defeat still fresh in his mind, he uses this new opportunity as a chance to bolster his tactics. As a leader, one must be willing to change and better himself or herself in order to make sure that his or her men stand the best chance at victory. Odysseus changed his approach with the Lotus Eaters, which kept his men from all falling under the control of the bewitching plant. Our experiences are what help teach us about ourselves. We must be willing to learn from our mistakes along the way in order to be the best version of ourselves.

Chapters 7-13 due tomorrow! Expect a reading check!

The Real Chris McCandless

Quick Discussion What do you think about Chris so far? Why the nickname – Alexander Supertramp? Why does Krakauer write the book out of order?

In Your Groups… Sort the strips in the cup into chronological order. (You are basing this list on how Chris lived the events, not where they fall in the memoir.) Use your book for help. Krakauer uses plenty of dates. When your timeline is correct, bullet point out the main ideas in the timeline provided on the handout. You will need to find the dates for most of the events. I started your time frame off; you need to fill in the rest! Look at the list of significant people in Chris’ life. Discuss with your group how each individual impacts Chris, and how he impacts them. Give a short description of why this person is significant to Chris or the narrative.
