Welcome to the Science Department Course Presentation 2015 Tom Lynch, Science Chairperson

Tonight’s Objectives…. Outline course requirements for Regents and Advanced Designation Diplomas Outline the ‘typical progression’ of a Roslyn High School student in the science department Criteria in consideration for the Honors Program Entrance requirements for the Advanced Placement Program Options in our Science Elective Program

1. Requirements for Graduation: Courses and Exams Regents Diploma Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation 3 Years of HS Science (passing grades) Pass one Regents Exam in any science Pass two Regents Exams 1 LE & 1 PS The "with honors" designation is added to either Regents Diploma option for students with an average score of 90 or more on all required Regents exams.

2. Suggested Programs for your Child The following slides show the likely science sequence for your child as they progress through their high school years. Please refer to the Course Description Book, pages 40 to 44, for more details.

If your child is in 8th Grade Science with Ms. Triebe 12th Grade – Physical Setting: Physics 11th Grade – Physical Setting: Chemistry 10th Grade – Living Environment 9th Grade – Physical Setting: Earth Science

9th Grade – Honors Biology If your child is in Honors Earth Science with Ms. Samide or Mr. Schmitt 9th Grade – Honors Biology 11th Grade – AP Physics 1 10th Grade – Honors Chemistry

3. High School Honors Program The High School Science Department offers Honors Level coursework, comparable to the SAT II, in the following core courses: Living Environment and Chemistry. When considering Honors placement for your child, be aware that the department recommends students to have a 90 or better average in their previous science course. Students will be prepared for the SAT II Subject Tests as a result of enrolling in our Honors Courses. Please refer to the Course Description Book, pages 40 to 44, for more details.

4. Advanced Placement Courses The High School Science Department offers Advanced Placement coursework in the following areas: Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science and Physics. When considering AP placement for your child, be aware that the department recommends students to have a 90 or better average in three previous core science courses. Students must sit for the AP Exam in May and complete a course final in June. Students may obtain Adelphi University credits (fee payable to Adelphi).

5. Electives In addition to students’ core studies, we offer a wide range of elective courses to meet the interests of our students! Please refer to the Course Description Book, pages 40 to 44, for more details.

It’s Easy Being Green It introduces students to the structure and function of plants organs as they relate to gardening. This course is a hands on, outdoor science class that will meet in the school courtyard during class. During the cooler months of school the class will meet in the school’s greenhouse and concentrate on caring for indoor plants and container gardens.

Is global warming threatening our existence? Will clones and robots soon be walking among us? Will flying cars, space travel and teleportation become reality?
