SAHS Critical Care Residency Program Sherry Parks BSN, MS, NEA-BC Vice President & Chief Nursing Officer Teri Woychick RN Director of Critical Care

SAHS Critical Care Residency Program SAHS Senior Leadership supports a multifaceted approach to address recruitment and retention which include: Partners in Practice Competitive Comp Program Graduate Nurse Residency Clinical ladder expansion to Nampa Critical Care Residency

SAHS Critical Care Residency Program CNO Philosophy of Critical Care Residency The recruitment of internal acute care nurses allows nurses, who are interested and qualified, to receive focused critical care education in a 6 month residency program. Experienced acute care nurse have acquired strong clinical skills and knowledge which serve as the foundation for an enhanced critical care education and training. The critical care residency program is an opportunity for the system to "grow our own" critical care nursing workforce.

SAHS Critical Care Residency Program Update 1st Cohort program has 9 total candidates within the system (8 in Boise & 1 Nampa candidate). Candidates were selected from the following criteria: Internal SAHS candidates only. Must be employed within a SAHS facility at least 6 months by January 1, 2016. Work experience must include a minimum of 11 months acute care experience by January 16, 2016. Must fulfill a full time status position.

SAHS Critical Care Residency Program Update Candidates selected came from a variety of acute care units. Orthopedics Telemetry General Surgery Medical/Oncology NICU Neurosurgery

SAHS Critical Care Residency Program Update Important Notes of the program Program began 1/18/2016 24 week residency that includes: Didactic education, simulation, integrated orientation plan to follow the Essentials of Critical Care Orientation (ECCO), & clinical orientation with designated preceptors. Critical Care Preceptors received updated training to align their mentoring with the 24 week program. Boise candidates will rotate through 3 critical care units during the 5th month. Basic Knowledge Assessment Test (BKAT) measures a body of knowledge beyond the required licensure for safe care of the critical care patient. BKAT to be used as the metric to evaluate the program competency.

SAHS Critical Care Residency Program Update What did the candidates have to say about their experience on the acute care units? “I thought I would be disappointed that I didn’t get hired to a critical care unit, but I have learned so much” “I wanted critical care after I got out of school” “I always wanted to be a critical care nurse” “realized that going to the acute care floors was important to my learning” “have received great experience on my unit and feel ready to take the next step with more critically ill patients” “I want a more broad, in-depth experience” “I like MRT’s and want more training” “I really like the cardiac patients”

SAHS Critical Care Residency Program Update 2nd Cohort to begin August 22, 2016 Application process open through 4/15/16. Panel interview by critical care management and education team. Plan for 9 candidates in 2nd Cohort.

SAHS Critical Care Residency Program Update Measures of success Metrics to follow BKAT score Retention of candidates Challenges for success Lack of applicants due to night shift scheduling post program. Retention is challenged as CRNA/NP programs have reduced experience to 1000 hrs. Critical Care serves as springboard to advanced degree programs.
