7 Principles of Democracy

Popular Sovereignty The people have the power in their government.

Republicanism People exercise their power by voting for their political representatives.

Federalism Power is divided between the federal government and the state governments.

Separation of Powers Power is divided among 3 branches to keep the government limited.

Checks and Balances Each branch can check, or control, the power of the other branches.

Limited Government Everyone must obey the law, including all government officials.

Individual Rights Each citizen has personal freedoms that are protected by the Bill of Rights.
