Martin Luther King Jr/ The Civil Rights Movement By: Dominic, Matt, Kelvin
Who was King and when and where was he born Martin Luther King Jr was an American Baptist minister, activist, humanitarian and leader in African American civil rights movement. He considered a career in medicine and law but rejected both and joined the Baptist church because of his strong faith in Christianity. He was born on January 15th, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia USA. He was the middle son of Michael King Sr. and Alberta Williams King. He had an older sister and a younger brother
What did King say was the enemy of the black people and what did he say could breach the divide between blacks and whites? How did these opinions differ from those of Malcom X.? In one of the greatest speeches by Martin Luther King Jr., “A Time to Break Silence,” he says, “Now they [The French] languish under our bombs and consider us, not their fellow Vietnamese, the real enemy.” You can see here that he clearly addresses the Vietnamese as the enemy of the black people. The whole purpose of this speech was to say war is wrong. He goes on to say that it isn’t the answer to anything. He just wants peace between the white and blacks but the whites want war to settle their problems. Malcom X is completely against Martin because he wants war. He says it will settle everything much easier and fair.
As king’s popularity grew, what happened in the south? The goal was to double the amount of black voters in the South. King was speaking about justice throughout the whole country. In February of 1960, a “Sit-in” movement started and spread to the south. By August of 1960, they were able to get twenty-seven southern cities to stop segregation.
When and how did King die and how did people react to his death? On April 4, 1968, Martin was standing on balcony of a motel and was shot by James Earl Bay. He was in Tennessee city supporting a garbage-collectors’ strike staying in a cheap hotel. He stepped out to motel balcony to “take an evening air” and talk with co-workers. At that moment he was shot dead. After this, media said this to be “both a symbol and a symptom of the nation’s racial malaise”.
What is the Civil Rights Movement and what impact did King’s life and death have on it? Martin Luther king had a strong belief in nonviolent protest which helped set the tone of the movement. He was a strong leader for the civil rights movement and won't be forgotten. Boycotts, protests, and marches were eventually effective, and much legislation was passed against racial discrimination. He was assassinated in the 1968 but lead a good protest to no more discrimination. He had many accomplishments he wanted to succeed in. His true belief in the ability of all mankind to live in peace went a very long way into the movement. He wanted peace from all colors in the world to be one and United as a nation.
List of things Martin Luther king Jr. accomplished Being an advocate for nonviolent protest in the Memphis sanitation worker strike Providing leadership in the Montgomery bus boycott of 1955 His famous "I Have a Dream" speech Being instrumental in establishing the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) in 1957, which was a civil rights organization that supported the philosophy of nonviolence
Martin Luther King Jr.’s Faith Martin Luther has been famous for his non violence. This aspect has come from his religion, Christianity. In the bible, it says do not murder and Martin was really loyal to God so he followed his rule. There is also a verse where it says, “If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also.” You can see how this came into play in Martins life. The blacks were being slaved by the whites and he could have decided to have war but instead he continued to let them slave them.
“I Have a Dream” The famous speech “I have a dream” recited by Martin Luther King is known for being of the best speeches ever said. But what made the speech so special that even today it is still known as one of the best speeches of all time? Kings speech was about social justice for black people. The main idea and message in the speech is that all people are born equal and, despite that not being the case in America at the time, King felt it must be the case for the future. He argued with passion and power. King explained his points while repeating one sentence every time. “I have a dream” followed by an explanation. I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character. There were many more motivational things said during that speech. Despite racism still affecting people today, Martin Luther King Jr’s vision changed the world in a noticeable way by making the world a more equal place and he is the reason why minorities have a voice.
