Energy Resources Sector in the UAE R&D Department National Qualifications Authority, UAE October 2016

UAE Vision 2021 Competitive knowledge economy (selected targets): Diversification of the economy away from the oil and gas sector Balanced growth must be fuelled by a sustainable range of energy sources, within which the UAE will ensure an important role for alternative and renewable options such as nuclear power.
Expansion of the private sector Increased efficiency and productivity within the public sector Emiratisation Indicator 2012 results 2021 targets Non-Oil Real GDP Growth 3.2% (Preliminary 2015) 5% Global Competitiveness Index Rank 16 (2016-2017 Report) Among the top 10 countries Share of UAE Nationals in the Workforce 0.61% (2015 Estimate) 8% Emiratisation Rate in the Private Sector 1.08% (2015)

Occupations and Careers Handbook for UAE Nationals From a range of national activity indicators, twelve (12) industry sectors were identified. About 20,000 UAE nationals enter the job market every year (Emirates National Development Programme (ENDP). The Handbook acts as an important reference for employment opportunities in the key sectors. The sectors were derived from information related to such activities as economic, social context, employment, and population size as well as synergies in the mix of occupational and vocational skills.

Oil and gas in the emirate of Abu Dhabi The UAE is a member of the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). In 2015, the annual production of crude oil in the emirate of Abu Dhabi was 1,068,575 thousand barrels, an increase of 6.6% compared with 2014. Oil was first discovered in the emirate of Abu Dhabi in 1958. Within a short period, the UAE's GDP increased more than 236-fold from AED 6.5 billion in 1971 to AED 1,540 billion in 2014. Currently, the UAE has the world's seventh largest reserves of both oil and natural gas, estimated at 97.8 million barrels and 215 trillion cubic feet, respectively. This means that it holds 4% of the world's oil reserves and 3.5% of gas reserves. The Government has adopted a long-term plan aimed at diversifying the economic base and increasing the contribution of non-oil activities to economic growth in the emirate. In 2015, the exports of crude oil in the emirate of Abu Dhabi was 892,230 thousand barrels, an increase of 10% compared with 2014. In 2015, the annual production of natural gas in the emirate of Abu Dhabi was 2,733,804 million cubic feet, a decrease 2.3% compared with 2014. In 2005, the UAE ratified the Kyoto Protocol to the UN Convention on Climate Change, becoming one of the first major oil-producing countries to do so. Contribution of non-oil sectors to the GDP 2014: 69% 2021: 80% Source: Ministry of Economy, UAE

Educational programmes in the oil and gas sector ADNOC Technical Institute Young Adipec Founded in 1978 as a training facility for the Oil and Gas Industry in the UAE Aims to provide the ADNOC Group of Companies with entry-level technicians for the various oil production installations around the country After training at ATI, on-the-job training programmes to develop the expertise required to work as skilled technicians An outreach programme offered by the Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference (ADIPEC) and Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC) to help cultivate the next generation of oil and gas professionals. Launched in 2013 for students between 14 and 17 years old in public and private schools 700 graduates since 2013 In 2016, four private and 14 public schools participate in the programme, up from six schools in 2013. Activities: touring leading energy companies participation in engineering workshops during the academic year participation in the inaugural Young Adipec Youth Forum in November 2016 The Petroleum Institute University and Research Center Founded in 2001 with a goal of becoming a world-class institution in both engineering education and energy industry research Offers undergraduate and graduate academic programmes alongside fundamental and applied research serving the Oil, Gas and Energy sectors’ needs The PI is sponsored by the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) and its international partners: BP, Shell, Total, and the Japan Oil Development Company

Renewable energy In 2014, fossil fuels made up 81% of the total energy consumed, only a 5% shift over the past 45 years. More renewable energy and increasing energy efficient applications could change that ratio with fossil fuels making up as little as 50% of primary energy. The UAE’s first World Green Economy Organisation (Wgeo) Launched in October 2016 to bolster a culture of green economy in the country, the region and around the world Established through an initiative and support of Dubai government in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Will provide consultations and technical, financial and moral support in the field of green economy Aims to be a primary reference for green sector parties doing research related to clean energy, the environment and human protection. A Green Economy for Sustainable Development Under this initiative, the UAE seeks to become a global hub and a successful model of the new green economy, to enhance the country's competitiveness and sustainability and preserve its environment for future generations. The UAE has many contributions in the field of renewable energy including: Shams 1, the largest concentrated solar power plant in the world Masdar city, the world’s first carbon-neutral, zero-waste city completely powered by renewable energy Energy production plants from wastes Abu Dhabi government-controlled energy firm TAQA, and Sharjah-based environment company Bee’ah The solar garden in Dubai. Irena HQ in the UAE Masdar City, Abu Dhabi, is home to the headquarters of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).

Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) ENEC aims to deliver safe, clean, efficient nuclear energy to the UAE. Energy demand in the UAE is growing at an annual rate of about 9% – three times the global average. Four nuclear plants are under construction in the Barakah region. By 2020, it is projected that nuclear energy will produce nearly a quarter of the nation’s electricity needs. 60% Emiratisation target Operates under the regulations of the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi and the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage, to develop programmes that will preserve and protect the local environment – both marine and land. ENEC offers a range of scholarships and career opportunities to UAE nationals through its Energy Pioneers programme. Higher Diploma in Nuclear Technology (HDNT) ENEC runs Higher Diploma in Nuclear Technology (HDNT) to prepare students for a career in the nuclear industry. The HDNT program offers students a combination of theoretical education and practical experience to prepare them for critical technical careers at the UAE’s nuclear energy plants. Students can choose from a range of specialties, such as Nuclear Reactor Operator, Instrumentation and Control Technologist, Mechanical Technologist, Chemistry Technologist, Electrical Technologist or Radiation Protection Technologist. At the end of the program, students graduate with a diploma, as well as a Job Qualification Certificate (JQC).

Recruitment of UAE graduates Recruitment of Top Graduates in the UAE – 2016 2016 Qudurat Wave III Salary expectations Main reason behind the choice of employer Employees’ expectations Graduates’ expectations 64% of companies hire people with the right attitude, versus the right degree; 57% of employers said their key challenge is “the lack of availability of talent with the necessary qualifications”; 0% of employers are interested in the ‘brand image’ of a job candidate’s university. Graduates believe in ‘the right qualification’ 26% of graduates see themselves as the CEO or general manager in 10 years.

The annual growth rate of compensation of employees at current prices in ‘Mining and quarrying, including crude oil and natural gas’ in 2015 was 5.2%.
