“ Alfred North Whitehead:The universities are schools of education, and schools of research. But the primary reason for their existence is not to be found either in the mere knowledge conveyed to the students or in the mere opportunities for research afforded to the members of the faculty. Both these functions could be performed at a cheaper rate, apart from these very expensive institutions. Books are cheap, and the system of apprenticeship is well understood. So far as the mere imparting of information is concerned, no university has had any justification for existence since the popularisation of printing in the fifteenth century. Yet the chief impetus to the foundation of universities came after that date, and in more recent times has even increased. The justification for a university is that it preserves the connection between knowledge and the zest of life, by uniting the young and the old in the imaginative consideration of learning. #Education

“ Alfred North Whitehead:Whether or no it be for the general good, life is robbery. It is at this point that with life morals become acute. The robber requires justification. #Farming and Farmers

“ Alfred North Whitehead:I will not go so far as to say that to construct a history of thought without profound study of the mathematical ideas of successive epochs is like omitting Hamlet from the play which is named after him. . . But it is certainly analogous to cutting out the part of Ophelia. This simile is singularly exact. For Ophelia is quite essential to the play, she is very charming-- and a little mad. #America

“ Alfred North Whitehead: In every age of well-marked transition, there is the pattern of habitual dumb practice and emotion which is passing and there is oncoming a new complex of habit. #Habit

“ Alfred North Whitehead:It does not matter what men say in words, so long as their activities are controlled by settled instincts. The words may ultimately destroy the instincts. But until this has occurred, words do not count. - from Science and the Modern World #Science and Scientists

“ Alfred North Whitehead: In the conditions of modern life the rule is absolute, the race which does not value trained intelligence is doomed. Not all your heroism, not all your social charm, not all your wit, not all your victories on land or at sea, can move back the finger of fate. To-day we maintain ourselves. To-morrow science will have moved forward yet one more step, and there will be no appeal from the judgment which will then be pronounced on the uneducated. #Uncategorised

“ Alfred North Whitehead:There are no whole truths all truths are half- truths. It is trying to treat them as whole truths that plays the devil. #Truth

“ Alfred North Whitehead:The only use of a knowledge of the past is to equip us for the present. The present contains all that there is. It is holy ground; for it is the past, and it is the future. #Past

“ #Action

“ Alfred North Whitehead:In a certain sense, everything is everywhere at all times. For every location involves an aspect of itself in every other location. Thus every spatio-temporal standpoint mirrors the world. #Time and Time Management

“ Alfred North Whitehead: Civilization advances by extending the number of important operations which we can perform without thinking. #Thoughts and Thinking

“ Alfred North Whitehead:Education is the acquisition of the art of the utilisation of knowledge. #Education
