High School Credit Classes at Doerre All high school credit courses grades are posted on your high school transcript A student who misses more than 9 days in a semester will be denied credit unless a doctor note is presented Students must be present on the day of the course final exam or they will receive a zero unless they provide a doctor note Exams may not be taken early

Typical 8th grade Schedule English/Language Arts (R, Pre AP, GT) Math (R), Algebra (Pre AP or GT) Science (R, Pre AP, GT) Social Studies (R, Pre AP, GT) 3 Electives (All students will also have a pride time that is built into their schedule after 4th period.)

Your will take Reading and Math STAAR tests this year. If unsuccessful on one or both of these tests, you will lose electives and take Power Math and/or Power Reading.

Spanish I for Native Speakers Spanish for Spanish Speakers I is designed for the student who has an ability to understand and speak Spanish. The emphasis of the instruction will be to expand the student’s existing oral proficiency through focus on grammatical concepts and to develop the skills of reading and writing Spanish so that they can communicate more successfully in social and business situations. (yearlong course 1 HS credit)

Spanish II or III for Native Speakers Spanish for Spanish Speakers is designed for the student who has an ability to understand and speak Spanish. Spanish I, French I, German I Must have a year end average in ELA of 80 or higher High school credit course with intense curriculum/expectations –Grade will post to high school transcript for colleges to see Students required to do homework and study vocabulary and grammar 20-30 minutes per night Recommend strong study skills and good attendance. Full year high school credit.

Spanish II Prerequisite – Successful completion of Spanish I Satisfies 2nd year requirement for Recommended Graduation Plan Expectation is to perform at a high level of proficiency at the 2nd year level with grade posting to your high school transcript. Full year high school credit.

French II Prerequisite – Successful completion of French I Satisfies 2nd year requirement for Graduation Plan Expectation is to perform at a high level of proficiency at the 2nd year level with grade posting to your high school transcript. Full year high school credit.

Reading Adolescent Literature For students who read on or above grade level and enjoy the opportunity to select books to read and share with others in class – FULL YEAR

NUMBER SENSE For students who enjoy a challenging, mental math course and have strong math skills. FULL YEAR COURSE

Digital Design Media Production Digital Design and Media Production students are required to have advanced technology skills to work in this high school level project-based classroom focused on learning design theory and additional technology skills to produce effective print, visual, and audio products. Students who have mastered keyboarding and have mastered the K-8 Technology Applications TEKS will demonstrate a thorough understanding of digital design principles that is transferable to other disciplines. Digital Design and Media Production combines the skills of electronic design, editing, and production of a product using a variety of hardware and software tools. This project-based course focuses on real-world audiences as customers. Students will learn to use a collection of software tools and design techniques to create products using print, online, photography and videography skills. Students are responsible for the costs of materials used in products they take home and other consumables. Yearlong HS credit course.

Digital Design Media Production (Hybrid) Hybrid - combination of traditional classroom and online learning activities  Self-disciplined to work independently  The willingness to collaborate with other students in a project setting  An eagerness to learn new technology skills  Ability to follow written or video tutorials  Introduces concepts used in graphic design, digital art, web design, photography, and video production.  Projects will combine basic design theory with technology skills to produce real-world print, visual, video and audio products. Yearlong HS credit course.

Digital Communication in the 21st Century Digital Communications in the 21st Century will prepare students for the societal demands of increased civic literacy, independent working environments, global awareness, and the mastery of a base set of analysis and communication skills. Students will be expected to design and present an effective product based on well-researched issues in order to thoughtfully propose suggested solutions to authoritative stakeholders. The outcome of the process and product approach is to provide students an authentic platform to demonstrate effective application of multimedia tools within the contexts of global communication and collaborative communities and appropriately share their voices to affect change that concerns their future. Yearlong HS credit course.

Principles of Human Services Year long high school credit class that covers personal human development, human services careers such as child care, cooking, decision making skills, and positive relationships

Principles of Information Technology Students will develop computer literacy skills to adapt to emerging technologies used in the global marketplace. Students will use word processing, spreadsheet, presentation and desktop publishing software applications to enhance reading, writing, computing, communication and reasoning skills. Students will also have opportunities to develop keyboarding skills or enhance their keying accuracy and speed. Yearlong HS credit course.

Path I HS This elective course is part of a college and career readiness system that provides students with instructional support in all Pre AP courses through in-class and after school tutoring. The class builds study and research skills necessary for success in high school and college courses. In a Path class students will be immersed in a college going/career ready culture to ensure those who are enrolled are not just college eligible-but college ready. HS credit course.

SEMESTER ELECTIVES Each class is a half year course. You must choose two to equal a full year.

Intro to Tech Theater This class will includes units of study in play analysis, stage set up, along with props, costume and make up. (possible fee $)

Crafts 3 dimensional Art class with hands on art projects Fee required to cover cost of projects No previous experience with Art needed

Touch System Data Entry Students apply technical skills to address business applications of emerging technologies. Students enhance reading, writing, computing, communication, and reasoning skills and apply them to the business environment. Students will need to apply touch system data entry for production of business documents. .5 High School credit course.

Gateway to Technology I Collaborative project-based class Use of design software to design and create virtual images of playground and furniture Study history and influence of automation and robotics Study of mechanical systems, energy transfer, machines and computer control systems Build and program real-world objects that may include traffic lights, toll booths and robotic arms. Fee associated with this HS elective course .5 High School credit Gateway to Technology II Successful completion of Technology I required. Hands-on exploration of electricity, the behavior and parts of atoms, and sensing devices. Students examine the impact of electricity and develop knowledge and skills in basic circuitry design. Fee associated with this course. .5 High School credit. Students electing Gateway I must also elect to choose Gateway II

Professional Communications- Career Focus Semester High School Credit Students will explore a variety of career options and develop an understanding of the relationship between academic skills and potential career goals

Communication Applications .5 High school elective credit class that develops professional and social speaking skills.

Health .5 High School Credit Elective Topics include personal responsibility for fitness and wellness

ATHLETIC SEASONS FOOTBALL VOLLEYBALL BASKETBALL BASKETBALL BOYS GIRLS 8th graders must have PE in their schedule in order to move into Athletics during the year. Students do not have to be in Athletics to take any other sport.

Boys PE / Girls PE Boys PE or Girls PE is NOT REQUIRED in 8th grade if you have already done two years at the intermediate level, but can be selected as one of your three elective choices
