Introduction For people who are going to travel the world it is especially important to know the language, common customs and traditions of the country they intend to visit. It is impossible, for example, to come to Scotland and laugh over their national clothes - plaid skirts, or to wonder that the Queen of the Great Britain starts her day with breakfast – oatmeal – it has long been established for her custom.

The monarchy (Queen) In England there is the Queen who really doesn`t rule the country. She is the part of the traditions of this country. The British believe, the monarchy promotes the unity of the nation and helps to maintain the national spirit. The British Parliament, whose age has passed for seven centuries, is becoming another year older.

Tea traditions English tea tradition began in the 16th century, with tea the British plan their day. The English have tea six times a day. The first cup of tea the British drink in bed - 6 - 7 a.m. The tradition arose because of the damp climate of England and morning fog. A cup of tea helps them to wake up.

National sport English entertainment are also traditional. National sports are considered to be golf, cricket, tennis and horse riding. Cricket for the English is more than a game. The British play it every Sunday. If you really want to gain their trust, learn cricket rules.

Private house with fireplace The British like being at home, they say "My home is my castle“. The British prefer to live in separate houses built for one family. The center of the house is a fireplace, around which all the family members like to sit, looking at the fire, sharing the news of the day.

Love for gardens The English enjoy taking care of their gardens. English gardens` main style is an imitation of nature and "wildness“.

The British politeness The English are polite and they often say "thank you", "I'm sorry“, they don`t talk loudly, they are too disciplined. The English are very restrained nation, they do not show their emotions even in tragic situations.

Love for animals The British love dogs. You will not find homeless cats and dogs in the streets. Society for the protection of animals from cruelty has a Royal status and was founded in England in 1824 . In Britain they have special dog shops, selling clothing and other things for dogs.

Talking about weather Weather is a weak point of British. All the jokes they are subjected to, are fair. Any English conversation really revolves around this topic. The main problem is that the British believe, they have a bad and unpredictable weather, which determines many aspects of their lives and character.

Left-hand traffic Drive on the left is originated from the chivalric times, when horsemen rode on the left hand, because in the right hand they held a weapon to strike the enemy, reaching forward. So that when you pass the road, look in all directions.

Strict upbringing Children in England are kept in rigor and the higher in society you are, the more rigor is. They say, "a true Englishman should be ready to face any difficulty”.

Private boarding school Another great tradition of the British is – giving a good education for their children. Boys and girls in England very often attend separate private boarding – schools. The tradition of study in these schools is originated in the middle ages, when Englishmen went to work in the colony and left their children in boarding-schools.

Changing clothes for dinner The British believe self-control the main advantage of human nature. In conversations at the table it is better to avoid topics relating to private life and money. In England traditionally is decided to change clothes for dinner, it must be a different garment from the one you put on at noon. Besides, if you are staying with a host family, every day you will have to get dressed in something new.

National holiday The national holiday of the United Kingdom is the birthday of the Monarch which may not coincide with the real date of birth of the Queen and since 1748 is celebrated on the second Saturday of June. On this day there is a ceremonial parade «Trooping the Colour» and a lush ball at the end of the day.

Halloween The brightest and finest holiday of the fall is Halloween. It is not considered an official holiday, but is celebrated on a large scale. On this day the British adorn yards and houses with symbols of Halloween - pumpkins with a carved face and a candle inside and put on scary costumes. All of this should scare away evil spirits on the eve of All Saints Day and bring home well-being.

Banking holidays The Brits celebrate lots of traditional holidays originated back in the 15th century. Most of the holidays they call "banking“, that`s because these days all the banks and other establishments are closed. Cheese Rolling at Cooper’s Hill, Pearly King and Queen, Guy Fawkes Night and others are among them.

Conclusion The British have many good traditions, such as giving a prestigious education for their children. But being driven by old traditions, memories of the glorious past, some foolish customs, such as Cheese Rolling at Cooper’s Hill, causing a lot of inconvenience, remain intact only because they are since immemorial time.
