UCCS Utility Costs UCCS Utility Bills range between $1.7-1.84 million Electricity is ~60% of utility bill Natural gas = 25-30% Water and Waste Water = 10% Utility Forecasts for Feb. 2009 ( a moving target) No increase in natural gas 40- 45% increase in water rates 8-10% increase in electricity

Overall, energy efficiency in UCCS buildings is increasing

American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment Complete an emissions inventory Within two years, set target date and interim milestones for becoming climate neutral Take immediate steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by choosing from a list of short-term actions Integrate sustainability into the curriculum and make it part of the educational experience UCCS one of the charter members to sign commitment 498 chancellors and presidents have signed the commitment All of the CU system has signed

Colorado Greening of State Government Executive Orders Goals for state agencies by June 30, 2012: 20% reduction in energy use 20% reduction in paper use 10 % reduction in water consumption 25% volumetric reduction in state vehicle petroleum consumption

Reducing carbon emissions 57 percent of ghg emissions reductions can come from energy efficiency. About 43 percent can come from renewable sources of energy including solar, wind, bio-fuels, biomass and geothermal. Chuck Kutscher, NREL

Center swimming pool Photovoltaic system – Science Engineering Mandatory Utility Containment Committee Potential transition of custodial crew to day shifts

Sample Office Energy Use Coffee maker - $38 per year (2.5 hours/day) Portable Heater - $30 per year Lighting - overhead - $26 per year Micro refrigerator - $25 per year Screensavers do not save energy and in fact may use more energy Computer using sceensaver – 60-250 Watts Computer set to sleep or standby – 1-6 Watts How to set: Control Panel-Power Options- Monitor 20 minutes, Hard disk 30 minutes, system – 2 hours

Be an energy hero – make saving energy your personal passion What Can You Do? Be an energy hero – make saving energy your personal passion 1. Always turn office and classroom lights off Turn off computers including monitors every night Turn off the monitor if you aren't going to use your PC for more than 20 minutes Turn off both the CPU and monitor if you're not going to use your PC for more than 2 hours. 3. Turn off printers and copy machines every night 4. Use daylighting whenever possible 5. Use task lighting with compact fluorescents or LEDs 6. Dress appropriately to cut down on personal heaters

What Can You do? 7. Turn off coffee makers – share coffee makers 8. Share a larger refrigerator rather than buying your own 9. Consider putting all appliances on power strip Outlet = 15W Power strip = 1-3 Watts (Save 2% of energy bill) Always look for the Energy Star label when purchasing appliances Contact Facilities Services with ideas or reports of energy waste – energy@uccs.edu
