Welcome Setting Goals – Reaching Dreams Online Tutoring Training Workshop The Learning Center The University of Louisiana-Lafayette

What is a S.M.A.R.T. goal? The goal needs to be specific. The goal needs to be measurable. The goal needs to be achievable. The goal needs to be realistic. The goal needs to have a timeline.

How do I set goals? Starting Line Goal Setting takes: 1. time 2. energy 3. thought 4. preparation A goal should have: 1. an action statement 2. an action plan 3. a target date (deadline)

Short-term and Long-term Meeting with a study group this weekend. Completing a research paper next week. Long- term Graduating with a degree in Computer Science. Entering medical school. Teaching college. REMEMBER Short-term goals add up to long-term goals!! You have to plan with the big picture in mind.

How do I start? State the goal as an action statement: For example: “I will understand my assigned chapters by…” Specify how the action statement will be accomplished by using an action objective: For example: “I will understand my assigned chapters by reading and writing outlines…” Measure the outcome in numbers For example: “I will understand my assigned chapters by reading 10 pages and writing 1 outline each night.”

How can I keep myself motivated? Lack of motivation = fear of failure or fear of change MOTIVATION all those factors that make people work towards a goal different types of motivation: achievement, recognition, growth, enjoyment, etc.

Success What are some ingredients to Success? A good attitude is the best start. Know your strengths. Set goals. Develop positive character traits. Master effective work skills. Be engaged! Keep your eyes on the prize. 8.time management Study habits academic integrity Values Self motivated Persistence Out look Self esteem

Success What are some obstacles to Success? Not written down Unrealistic or not specific enough Not really believable Not really realistic Lack of commitment Changes or switches with the weather No one knows or lack of support No rewards are given Lack of motivation Working too much Living situation Lack of support Extracurricular activities Poor money management Your attitude!

In terms of Academics How can goal setting help you academically? Memory Stress levels Note taking Problem-solving Time management Listening and communication Test preparation and test taking Self-motivation and determination Decreases the difficulty of passing classes Increases skills of goal setting for after college Positively affects other areas of life, not just academics Decreases stress and anxiety Increases concentration, self-confidence, performance, and overall enjoyment of college life Leads to a quicker graduation date College costs too much money and time to risk failure!
