Ecological Succession Have you ever wondered how life starts in a new area? Succession means when one organism __________ from another. One king would.

Presentation transcript:

Aim: How does ecological succession take place in a lake community? DO NOW: Define ecological succession. Describe the difference between primary and secondary ecological succession.

Ecological Succession One community being replaced by another, with time!

Succession in a Lake Community A lake community can change into a forest with time A lake has fish, plants, etc. Sediments from broken rock start to fill the lake and form a shallow lake More & more sediments fill up the lake until it becomes a swamp More filling  swamp becomes forest!

Forest Community The forest is a climax community  will remain there for a long time Can last for hundreds or thousands of years
