Le FUTUR There are TWO ways of expressing the FUTURE in English and in French: The Immediate Future (something is going to happen)Ex: I am going to eat = Je vais manger 2. The Simple Future (something WILL happen) Ex: I will eat = je mangerai

- ER - IR - RE (Ex: Parler Finir Prendre) Je Parlerai Finirai Prendrai Tu Parleras Finiras Prendras On Il Parlera Finira Prendra Elle Nous Parlerons Finirons Prendrons Vous Parlerez Finirez Prendrez Ils / Elles Parleront Finiront Prendront

Oddities: -YER verbs (Y changes to I) (Ex: PAYER = to pay) Je PAIERAI Tu PAIERAS IL PAIERA Nous PAIERONS Vous PAIEREZ Ils PAIERONT Similar verbs: EMPLOYER = to use / employ ENNUYER = to bore / get bored ESSAYER = to try / attempt ESSUYER = to wipe NETTOYER = to clean Accents: (e – è) ACHETER (= to buy) – j’ACHÈTERAI LEVER ( = to raise) – Je LÈVERAI MENER (= to lead) – je MÈNERAI PESER (= to weigh) – je PÈSERAI Double consonants: (l – ll / t – tt) APPELER (= to call) – j’APPELLERAI JETER (= to throw) – je JETTERAI

Irregular Verbs ALLER IRAI, IRAS, IRA, IRONS, IREZ, IRONT There are several irregular verbs, but the most important ones are: ALLER IRAI, IRAS, IRA, IRONS, IREZ, IRONT AVOIR AURAI, AURAS, AURA, AURONS, AUREZ, AURONT ÊTRE SERAI, SERAS, SERA, SERONS, SEREZ, SERONT FAIRE FERAI, FERAS, FERA, FERONS, FEREZ, FERONT

More irregular verb stems in Future: SAVOIR (= to know) – je SAURAI CUEILLIR (= to pick) – je CUEILLERAI VOULOIR (= to want) – je VOUDRAI DEVOIR (= to have to) – je DEVRAI APERCEVOIR (= to notice) – j’APERCEVRAI DÉCEVOIR (= to disappoint) – je DÉCEVRAI RECEVOIR (= to receive) – je RECEVRAI S’ASSEOIR (= to sit down) – je M’ASSIÉRAI COURIR (= to run) – je COURRAI SECOURIR (= to help) – je SECOURRAI MOURIR (= to die) – je MOURRAI POUVOIR (= to be able) – je POURRAI VOIR (= to see) – je VERRAI ENVOYER (= to send) – j’ENVERRAI TENIR (= to hold) – je TIENDRAI VENIR (= to come) – je VIENDRAI The following 3 are really only ever used in IL form: VALOIR (= to be worth) – il VAUDRA FALLOIR (= to be necessary) – il FAUDRA PLEUVOIR (= to rain) – il PLEUVRA

Essential verbs you MUST know in Future: Remember, you already know the Future Tense endings: -ai, -as, -a, -ons, -ez, -ont So, to make our lives easier, if we just learn the IRREGULAR STEMS, then we just plug on the required ending: Example: AVOIR (je) AUR- j’aurai

Essential verbs you MUST know in Future: Aller – IR- Avoir – AUR- Devoir – DEVR- Être – SER- Faire – FER- Savoir – SAUR- Vouloir – VOUDR- S’asseoir – ASSIÉR- Courir – COURR- Envoyer – ENVERR- Mourir – MOURR- Pouvoir – POURR- Voir – VERR- Tenir – TIENDR- Venir – VIENDR- Il faudra Il pleuvra

Use of FUTURE TENSE: BE CAREFUL! English is often very misleading in its tense usage, French is FAR more logical! English Example: When I arrive at school, I will eat Present tense Future tense

French Example: Quand j’arriverai à l’école, je mangerai Future tense Future tense LOGICALLY, French puts BOTH verbs in the FUTURE tense (obviously, the eating will take place in the future, but ALSO so will the arriving as, at the time of speaking, the speaker will still arrive and eat in the future)

Words that often require FUTURE: Quand… Lorsque… = when… Au moment où… Dès que… = as soon as… Aussitôt que… Pendant que… = while / at same time as… Tandis que…

Practice: When Peter arrives, I will see him = As soon as you arrive, we will eat dinner = While the boy plays the guitar, the girl will sing =

Les réponses: When Peter arrives, I will see him = Quand / Lorsque / Au moment où Pierre arrivera, je le verrai. As soon as you arrive, we will eat dinner = Dès que / Aussitôt que tu arriveras, nous dînerons. While the boy plays the guitar, the girl will sing = Pendant que / tandis que le garçon jouera de la guitare, la fille chantera.
