**Republicans are losing control in states so they need a popular man for presidential candidate. Ulysses S. Grant- -2 terms 1869-1877 -war hero (commander of Union forces) -presidency plagued with corruption and economic crisis

The Era of Good Stealings Grant’s Black Friday -Millionaires Jay Gould and Jim Fisk plan to buy up gold to corner market and raise prices of gold -They bribe Grant’s brother-in-law to talk Grant out of releasing gold from treasury. -Gould and Fisk sell their gold for high prices -Grant puts more gold in circulation- -prices fall and market falls.

Credit Mobilier (1872) -Union Pacific Railroad cheats the U.S. government of $23 million -Bribed several members of gov’t including congressman, vice-president, speaker of the House.

Whiskey Ring -To pay for war, taxes go up on distillers -distillers bribe tax collectors to allow them to pay taxes on a minimum of the supply -gov’t officials and Grant’s secretary get involved and forge tax stamps -Becomes a nationwide scandal

Boss Tweed and Tammany Hall -Tammany Hall started as a social/political club but became a political machine. -”Boss” Tweed made millions of dollars through corruption -Took bribes for city contracts -Took payoffs for city jobs -Juggled city accounting books -Bought votes for democrats by aiding poor immigrants. -Brought down by a NY Times reporters and cartoons by Thomas Nast

Grant was known for practicing the “spoils system.” (rewarding supporters with positions) He was also known to take gifts such as wine, cigars, and horses for favors.

Election of 1876 Democrat- -Samuel J. Tilden Republican- -Rutherford B. Hayes **4 states have disputed voting results. A special electoral commission is set up to decide results. **To get Hayes elected, the Republicans make compromises to southern Democrats

Compromise of 1877 **South would accept Rutherford B. Hayes as president **North would: -remove federal troops from the South -have a democrat on Hayes’ cabinet (David M. Key of TN becomes postmaster general) -construction of another transcontinental railroad through the south -legislation to help industrialize the south **The Compromise officially ended Reconstruction

Which event occurring during the Reconstruction period most likely had a negative impact of African-Americans? The “boss” system that existed in many American cities The Credit Mobilier Scandal The Compromise of 1877 that solved the election dispute between Hayes and Tilden The exposure of the Whiskey Ring Why? Once the federal troops were removed from the south, there was no one willing to protect the rights of the African-Americans.

Disenfranchise- -take away voting rights During the period of Reconstruction and the years following, southerners worked hard to disenfranchise the newly freed slaves. What does disenfranchise most likely mean?
