Analyzing the Structure of a Poem pg. 152 #4 The repetition of the lines about Brennan keep bringing the reader back to Brennan’s character and how the poet sees him as a hero. The rest of the poem tells about Brennan robbing the mayor on the highway, which by itself would just make Brennan seem like “the bad guy.” But again and again, the lines are repeated that he is “bold and undaunted.” From this, a reader understand the common people probably saw the mayor and other rich people as unjust and Brennan as a hero. #5 The four- and two-line stanzas in the poem serve different purposes. The four-line stanzas tell the story of Brennan. Each stanza adds a new scene to the story. For example. The second four-line stanza tells about Brennan meeting the mayor on the highway, and how the mayor wants to take him in. In the third four-line stanza, Brennan’s wife gives him a gun, and in the fourth, he robs the mayor. In contrast, the two-line stanzas area all repetitions of the same line. Basically, these lines tell the reader how many people of the time viewed Brennan.
