Review of Evolution and Environmental Science Catalyst What is the 10% rule? What is carrying capacity? What happens to population size when it is above carrying capacity? Why? What is one thing that you – YOU! – can do to reduce global warming? How will it help the environment? Write in complete sentences! Don’t talk during the Catalyst!

Agenda Catalyst Review Quiz-Quiz-Trade Trashketball Independent work time Inconvenient Truth Exit Question

Quiz-Quiz-Trade Find a partner. Quiz them with your question on your notecard. If they can’t get it right, coach them (coaching is not telling them the answer!) Then your partner quizzes you. Once you have each successfully answered your question, trade your notecards. Then raise your hand. High-five someone with a raised hand. BAM! You’re now partners. The purpose of QQT is to have students practice vocabulary (so they can use it intelligently in the next review activity) and low-level Bloom’s knowledge/skills (the next activity will get at higher-level knowledge/skills)

Trashketball Teams in tables 2 minutes to solve Scoring Team with the MOST COMPLETE correct answer shoots. You must be able to DEFEND your answer to shoot for it. Scoring Dunk = 1 point Free throw = 2 points Three-pointer = 3 points Mark a free-throw line on the floor with tape. I will “randomly” choose one of the team-members to defend the answer. So, in heterogeneous pairs, the lower student has a vested interest in being taught by the higher student. If the student fails to defend the answer, I will choose (randomly, with flash-cards) another student to defend the answer and shoot for half points.

A random mutation causes some ants to have longer antennae than others A random mutation causes some ants to have longer antennae than others. What will determine whether the frequency of the long-antennae allele will increase? The environment! In some environments, having long antennae might increase fitness. In other environments, it might decrease fitness. 32b15/e20

How is sunlight related to natural selection Solar radiation causes mutations. Natural selection causes mutations that increase fitness to become more common, and mutations that decrease fitness to become less common over time. How is sunlight related to natural selection 32b15/e20

Burning gasoline produces CO2. Drive less, take the bus; walk more; ride a bicycle; buy a hybrid, electric, or hydrogen car. How does driving a car cause global warming, and how can we solve this problem? 32b15/e20

According to natural selection… Traits that increase fitness become more common Traits that decrease fitness become less common What determines if a trait becomes more common or less common over time? 32b15/e20

Humans breathe out CO2, but that amount is tiny compared to how much CO2 we put in the atmosphere through burning fossil fuels, deforestation, and factories Stanley says that humans are the main cause of global warming, because we breathe out CO2. Why is he incorrect? 32b15/e20

Some rabbits hop quickly, other rabbits hop slowly Some rabbits hop quickly, other rabbits hop slowly. Rabbits must compete against each other for food—there are not enough carrots to feed everyone. What is the environmental pressure? Competition for food 32b15/e20

Increases, because that gene increases fitness (rabbits that hop quickly get more food, live longer, have more babies) Some rabbits hop quickly, other rabbits hop slowly. Rabbits must compete against each other for food—there are not enough carrots to feed everyone. What happens to the frequency of the gene that causes fast hopping, and why? 32b15/e20

Buy recycled paper, plant trees, green roofs, stop deforestation. Trees convert CO2 into O2 during photosynthesis, so cutting them down causes there to be more CO2 in the atmosphere. Buy recycled paper, plant trees, green roofs, stop deforestation. How does deforestation cause global warming, and how can we solve this problem? 32b15/e20

The environment! In some environments, more dark blends in better. In other environments, it blends in worse. In a population of zebras, some zebras have more dark stripes than white stripes. What factor determines if the gene for this trait will become more common? 32b15/e20

Random mutations caused by… Solar radiation Manmade radiation Errors in transcription/translation In a population of rose bushes, some bushes have long thorns, while other buses have short thorns. What is the cause of the natural variation in thorn length? 32b15/e20

We get most of our electricity from burning coal, which produces CO2. Buy LED/CFL light bulbs; use solar, wind, or water to generate electricity; turn your lights off! How does leaving the lights on when you aren’t in the room cause global warming, and how can we solve this problem? 32b15/e20

 In your opinion, what is the overall best way for human beings to slow down global warming? 32b15/e20

Independent Work Time

We didn’t finish Inconvenient Truth in class We didn’t finish Inconvenient Truth in class. I’d like to show 1:22 to 1:30, to make sure we end on a hopeful note.

Exit Questions – CHOOSE THREE What do greenhouse gases (such as CO2) do? Why is it important there there are SOME greenhouse gases in our atmosphere? Why is it important that cells in meiosis divide two times? (Think: what would happen if they only divided once?) What is natural selection? Which organelle converts glucose and oxygen into ATP?
