State Officer Leadership Continuum Premier Experiences for Premier Students

Phase IV: Builders Identification Objectives National FFA staff will identify quantifiable behaviors to assess mastery in each Measure of Success. National FFA staff will validate their work using representatives of the Phase III workgroup. outcomes Two to five behaviors, called “builders,” were identified for each Measure of Success. Builders were reviewed and validated by stakeholders.

Phase V: Objective Alignment Objectives FFA and Vivayic will engage stakeholders in constructing a framework for the delivery of the 11 focus areas. The framework will involve both a cyclical learning model and a blended learning model, at the recommendation of the Phase I and Phase III workgroups. outcomes Stakeholders recommended a model that allows for delivery of all focus areas timed to the needs of each state. The model uses face-to-face, instructor-led training that is sandwiched by reflective, self- guided experiences while emphasizing experiential learning.

Kick Off Event Three-day experience hosted in each state (8 hours of content/day). Ideally hosted within 30 days of state officers’ election. Ratio of one facilitator to one team. Facilitators will enroll state officers in their FFA.org profiles and the state officer learning management system. Focus areas will include: sound character, influence through positive actions, professionalism, and time management.

In-State Experiences Maximum of two in-state experiences allowed per state, in addition to the Kick Off. Content may be divided and scheduled as needed, throughout the year. Minimum of eight hours of content per experience. Ratio of one facilitator to one team. Focus areas will include: conversation skills, team dynamics, public speaking, effective workshops and communication tools.

D.C. Conference Synchronized experience in late July for all state FFA officers. Focus will continue to be on advocacy with an extended experience for delegate work. The experience will be facilitated by the national FFA officers. We are heavily exploring the possibility of a professional development track for state FFA staff. Focus areas will include: Advocating for Agriculture and FFA and Clear and Relevant Messaging.

Primers and Boosters Will precede (“Primers”) and follow (“Boosters”) the Kick Off event, in- state experiences and the D.C. Conference. Intended to lay a foundation for the face-to-face experiences and build a habit of on-going learning. Experiences may be self-guided or team-guided but are meant for individual assessment and reflection. Delivered online in various forms including, but not limited to, videos, assessments, e-learning modules, instructor-led web trainings, or independent readings.

Convention Elective Sessions Face-to-Face booster sessions hosted during the National FFA Convention & Expo. Will be scheduled around delegate commitments. Participation is free of charge and is encouraged of all state officers, but not required. Separate programming available for delegates who are not also state officers.

Capstone Experience Equips officers to transfer skills learned in an FFA context to leadership contexts outside of FFA. As the name implies, it brings together the culmination of students’ continuum training. State Officer Programs staff is engaging with alumni and corporate sponsors to determine how to make this a “total picture” experience. Since this is the farthest experience from present day, there is still ample opportunity to shape the delivery of this experience.

Phase VI: Curriculum Development and Piloting Objectives Vivayic will design curriculum that meets the 11 focus areas while remaining true to the recommended framework of the Phase V workgroup National FFA staff will pilot curricula in four states in 2017-18, in lieu of Blast Off and NLCSO. Outcomes (Anticipated) Vivayic will follow an aggressive design schedule that will deliver the curriculum in stages between December 2016 and October 2018. New curriculum will be piloted in Maryland, Missouri, Nebraska and Texas among 2017-18 state officers.

Phase VII: Full Implementation Objectives Vivayic will use the results of the pilot experiences to deliver a “gold” version of curriculum to national FFA staff. National FFA staff will use the “gold” version of curriculum to deliver the entire new continuum model to the 2018-19 state officers. Outcomes (Anticipated) The 2018-19 state officers will begin their continuum experience following their election to state office and conclude with a capstone experience in conjunction with their 2019 retirement from state office.
