Data Transfer between Discovery Services and Library Catalogs: A Case Study at the University of the Fraser Valley By Hongfei Li and Diane Cruickshank Presented at ICADL 2015 by Diane Cruickshank

In August 2012, UFV adopted the EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS) In August 2012, UFV adopted the EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS). This presentation will be about: Our daily updates of our bibliographic holdings from SIRSI to the EDS. The integration of a SIRSI customization, a interactive library map, into the Discovery interface.

1: Our primary challenge was maintaining an up to date record of our holdings within the EDS. Refreshing our holdings to the EDS server was a 2-4 hour task, requiring the manual load of 22 files or more, using Core FTP. For our small cataloguing department, this was not an effective use of their time. Our biggest problem was the discrepancy of our deleted records and their continued display in the EDS. As there was no record left in SIRSI, there was nothing to overwrite the item record in the EDS.

UFV needed to find a way: to recreate a “fake” MARC record of our deleted items, to add a “d” to the LDR, to merge all our file updates into one file and transfer it to EBSCO automatically without using any staff time. Using a modified API script, we extract cat keys of our deletions from our transaction log into a text file; Using a Perl script, the LDR is identified and a “d” is added Korn Shell commands are used to merge the deleted item file and the other updates into one large file and Finally using a cron job the data was FTPed to the EDS.

2: Integrating our dynamic location map into the EDS Students can click on the “floor map” link, within the EDS search results, to find a graphic representation of where the book is located in the library.

EBSCO technical support created a hypertext link “Floor Map” for the searched item, which redirects the request to a layer program housed on a Linux server at UFV. This program is designed to receive the catalog key from EDS interface, query the ILS for the call number/location, and generate dynamic maps for the selected book title. A pop-up window opens, displaying the dynamic map. The program uses a PHP script and a pre-created base floor map database.

Thank you for coming and thank you to the ICADL 2015 for this opportunity.
