CAPELLA SHANGHAI, JIAN YE LI Located in the cultural preservation zone of Shanghai’s Xuhui District, Capella Shanghai will be the city’s only all-villa urban resort in the last remaining cluster of the historical “Shikumen” (stone warehouse gate) estate. Originally built in the 1930s by the French real estate company Foncière et Immobilière de Chine, the Jian Ye Li estate is comprised of the ultra-luxury Capella Shanghai, Capella Residences and The Gallery, a retail destination for lifestyle brands. Sensitively restored for the affluent clientele, these “shikumen” buildings are a marriage of traditional Shanghainese and Western architectural styles which first appeared in the 1860s.

ARCHITECTURAL HERITAGE

SHANGHAI’S ARCHITECTURAL HERITAGE FROM THE 1930S The Jian Ye Li estate houses 22 rows of “Shikumen” lanes that connect more than 200 two-story houses. A distinctive landmark of the Jian Ye Li estate is the Water Tower. Early residents used it for their water source. In later years, it provided access to the basement as well as for air circulation in the basement. Being the tallest point of the estate, the Water Tower functions as the light tower and signal service tower.

JAYA IBRAHIM’S DESIGN PHILOSOPHY The Jian Ye Li estate features the Matou end wall gables (马头墙), which is distinctive to these “Shikumen” houses in Shanghai. Its characteristics include narrow alleyways, natural day light through the skylights, inner courtyards and embellished stone arches over the main gates and doorways. Jaya Ibrahim’s priority is to respect this Shanghainese culture and traditional architectural heritage. The design objective is to recreate the exclusive communal living experience from the 1930s. The end result is an elegant blend of French-accent furniture with Chinese sensibility, reflected through artwork and accessories. Jaya’s calm and peaceful palette allows for the beautiful Chinoiserie element to be embraced and infused into the design, using local materials for the interior finishes. Rhythm and symmetry are expressed in the furniture layout and ceiling designs, forming the foundation of the charming characteristics of this unique architectural heritage.

The estate was originally built by the French real estate company, Foncière et Immobilière de Chine. The company’s monogram is still retained on the hotel’s façade after nearly 100 years.
