Elements of Culture Describe the elements of culture and analyze the processes of cultural convergence and cultural divergence

Define Culture in your own words: The language, customs and beliefs of a group of people Describe the elements of culture and analyze the processes of cultural convergence and cultural divergence.

Elements of Culture Language, food/drink, religion, music, nationalism, sports/games, clothing, etc.

Why Sports? Sports are far and away THE MOST watched television programs in the world Over 2 billion people watched the final match of the 2006 World Cup. Politicians all over the world have been involved in sports Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi owns soccer club A.C. Milan Former President George W. Bush owned part of the Texas Rangers baseball team And if you want to make money working for the U.S. government….

Why Sports? President Obama’s annual salary = $400,000 Charlie Strong’s annual salary =$ 5,000,000

Cultural Diffusion The spread of culture The origin of all European languages is pictured below

Cultural Diffusion: How does culture usually spread Cultural Diffusion: How does culture usually spread? (Write question and answer)

Diffusion: The Wave Allegedly, the wave began at an MLB game in Oakland in late 1980 during a cheer led by Krazy George Henderson . Krazy George then used this idea to (purposely) start a wave on October 15, 1981 in Oakland at the American League Baseball Championship game between the local Athletics and the New York Yankees. The wave’s final step toward its diffusion as a ubiquitous global entity occurred when it was used by crowds at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico. Markovits, Andrei S.; Rensmann, Lars (2010-05-17). Gaming the World (p. 154). Princeton University Press. Kindle Edition.

Diffusion: The High Five  Began as symbol of brotherhood in African-American communities in the 1960s and spread throughout the country and then to sporting events throughout the world.  Officially added to dictionary in 1980 Whenever European soccer players greet their opponents before every game, or a player leaves the field to be replaced by another, the standard form of acknowledgment is a version of the “high five,” or of a handshake popularized by African American men as a symbol of brotherhood disseminated to the world in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Both of these have entered European sports in a massive way and have through the conduit of sports spread far into other purviews of society. University of Louisville basketball player Derek Smith claims to have coined the expression “high five” during the 1979– 80 season. The term then entered the dictionary in 1980 as a noun and 1981 as a verb. Markovits, Andrei S.; Rensmann, Lars (2010-05-17). Gaming the World (pp. 152-153). Princeton University Press. Kindle Edition.

The process of cultures blending together Cultural Convergence The process of cultures blending together

Cultural Convergence: “Mala” Rodriguez Answer the following questions after listening: Where was Mala raised? What does Mala mix hip hop with to make her music unique?  How did Rap get to Latin America? What makes the issues Mala raps about different from American rappers?

Convergence: “Hip-Hop” and Sports Made popular by hip-hop artists in the U.S.  Michigan basketball players began wearing their shorts baggier in the 1990s and the trend spread across the globe (and ended short-shorts in sports like basketball and soccer) Unlike musical genres preceding it, like rock, blues, and jazz— with which hip hop shares the centrality of African Americans as performers and cultural leaders— sports, and basketball in particular, are central to hip hop alone. Markovits, Andrei S.; Rensmann, Lars (2010-05-17). Gaming the World (p. 150). Princeton University Press. Kindle Edition.

Cultural Divergence The resistance of cultural groups to assimilate (to blend) The Amish
