1941-1945 THE HOLOCAUST BEGINS

What makes up the Holocaust

Transporting the Jews MANY JEWS IN POLAND AND RUSSIA WERE TRANSPORTED HUNDREDS OF MILES, AWAY FROM HOME, IN TERRIBLE CONDITIONS THAT WOULD TAKE THEM TO CONCENTRATION CAMPS ALL OVER WESTERN EUROPE.

Ghettos Jews were not only segregated but isolated into Ghettos. These were the poorest, most dilapidated parts of cities. They were over crowded and diseased. There was little sanitation, food, or education

Ghettos

Concentration Camps   THESE WERE CAMPS WHERE JEWS WERE FORCED TO GO TO, TO BE TORTURED OR TO DO WORK

What were they used for? THESE CAMPS WERE USED TO “HOUSE” THE JEWS. EVENTUALLY GERMANS BEGAN TO KILL THE JEWS BY USING POISONOUS GASES, FIRE, AND TESTINGS OF MEDICAL EXPERIMENTS ON THE JEWS

Extermination Camps   THESE WERE CAMPS THAT JEWS WERE SENT TO, TO BE KILLED. THEY WERE ALSO KNOWN AS DEATH CAMPS.

THE GERMANS BUILT SIX DEATH CAMPS.   THE GERMANS BUILT SIX DEATH CAMPS.

The 6 Death Camps of the Holocaust Auschwitz Majdanek Belzec Sobibor Chelmno Treblinka

Auschwitz The killing centre where the largest numbers of European Jews were killed. By mid 1942, mass gassing of Jews using Zyklon-B began at Auschwitz, where extermination was conducted on an industrial scale with some estimates running as high as three million persons eventually killed through gassing, starvation, disease, shooting, and burning. 9 out of 10 were Jews. In addition, Gypsies, Soviet POWs, and prisoners of all nationalities died in the gas chambers.

Majdanek

Belzec An extermination center that consisted of two camps divided into three parts: administration section, barracks and storage for plundered goods, and extermination section. Initially, there were three gas chambers using carbon monoxide housed in a wooden building. They were later replaced by six gas chambers in a brick and concrete building.

Sobibor The largest single massacre action of the Holocaust and lasted twenty-one months, carried out by the Nazi extermination machine. It was a substantial part of the overall plan for the Final Solution of the Jewish Problem - the Germans’ plan to physically liquidate all Jews of Europe. Sobibor operated for only one purpose: to kill as many Jews including children as quickly as possible. No selections were made for work or death - victims were brought to the camp in cattle cars and all but a handful were gassed immediately after arrival.

Chelmn0 The camp consisted of two parts: administration section, barracks and storage for plundered goods; burial and cremation site. It operated three gas vans using carbon monoxide.

Treblinka Hundreds of thousands of Jews were at this camp. It was located near an existing penal labour camp and covered an area of 17 hectares. The camp was surrounded by a high barbed wire fence camouflaged with interwoven greenery to hide what was happening inside. Anti-tank obstacles and rolls of barbed wire were placed outside the fence. Watch towers were additionally positioned around the camp.

IN THE END IN 1945 THE WAR HAD COME TO AN END. BY THEN, ALL THE CONCENTRATION CAMPS WERE CLOSED. AND VERY FEW JEWS SURVIVED. MANY DIED DUE TO THE HARSH CONDITIONS OF THE CAMPS, EXPERIMENTS, TORTURING, AND THE KILLING THAT OCCURRED AT THE CAMPS
