What is a Flipped Classroom? A flipped classroom is where teachers create videos for students to watch before they experience the content in the classroom. A video created by a teacher can be used in many ways to increase student understanding.

Creating a YouTube Channel Go to YouTube and click sign in. You will need to associate your YouTube log in with a google account. (If you do not have a google account you can also set up a YouTube channel – it is better to link one to an account). After logging in, go to settings (by clicking your profile picture at the top right) and go to create a channel. You will have to select what type of channel you want (personal or business). I chose personal but this is up to you. Once you fill in your username and password you may start making a publicizing videos.

Next Steps Once you have created a YouTube channel you can now start creating videos to upload to your channel. There are many questions to consider before creating these videos: Do you want to be in the video? Would you prefer to just have voice over? Do you want to show notes, powerpoints, computer screens, etc.? What is the cost?

Selecting Method Swivl/Ipad – Using this method will cost some money up front to purchase the items (this is what I have created my videos with). The swivl/Ipad will act as a camera and follow you and record your movements/sound. Screencast-o-matic – This method has a free version. This method uses your webcam and does screen shots and voice over. Document Cameras – Some, not all, document cameras also have the capability of recording and making videos. (I have used this method as well; however, I did not upload these to YouTube).

Quick Tips When making the video: Have a plan like you would for a normal day of teaching Make the video short to keep their attention Review any pre-requisites Don’t be afraid to mess up. You can always start over or edit the video.

Posting the Video Depending on where you post the video there are steps that need to be taken. I have posted videos on my YouTube channel, Blackboard, and other places. I prefer to upload to my YouTube channel for several reasons. Students want access to the videos at different times using different devices. Former students want access to the videos. Videos can stay on the channel (until you take them down) which allows for formative and summative assessment reviews to be completely student lead. They select what content they need to review and they can find the appropriate video.

How to Post When you log into your YouTube channel there is an Upload (Arrow pointing Up) at the top right by your profile picture. When you select that option you will be prompted to select files to upload. If you are using a document camera, screencast, or something similar this would be the way to upload. If you are using a SWIVL, you will have to log into your SWIVL account, download the video and then export it into the YouTube channel. (All these steps are explained when if you purchase a SWIVL.

Improvements? Next year, I plan to use other programs along with my videos to ensure students are engaged and watching the videos. I am looking into programs like Quizzizz (which is free!) Playposit. Student suggestions: Provide a guided note sheet to complete with the lesson. Create videos for enrichment/above and beyond expected learning content.
