Larisa Prokhorova Department of English Philology, KemSU The Challenges of Millennial Generation: Do They Change our Approach to Teaching? Larisa Prokhorova Department of English Philology, KemSU

What, exactly, is the Millennial generation What, exactly, is the Millennial generation? How did millennials get their name?

The six living generations GI Generation/Great Generation - поколение Победителей (1900—1923 г. р.) Mature/Silents - Молчаливое поколение (1923—1943 г. р.) р.) Generation Z/Boomlets - Поколение Z (c 2001 г. р.) Neil Howe and William Strauss, 1991

Generation Y: “millennial” and “Gen Y” are the same thing. Echo boomers: As children of Boomers, millennials make up the largest generation since their parents. Digital natives: They are the first generation who don’t know life without the internet and personal tech devices.

Millennial statistics (Source: Pew Research): They have the highest average number of Facebook friends, with an average of 250 friends vs. Generations X's 200. 55 percent have posted a selfie or more to social media sites versus 20 percent of Generation X. They send a median of 50 texts a day. Millennials are the last generation born in the 20th century.

Characteristics of 21st Century Learners Want to have a say in their education.  Often have higher levels of digital literacy than their parents or teachers.  Want you to tell them when you have messed up, apologize for it, and move on.  Don’t care as much about having a job as they do about making a difference.  Want to connect with others in real time on their own terms.  Collaborate amazingly well.  Really can multi-task.  Appreciate a “trial and error” approach to learning new skills.  Learn by doing.

Characteristics of 21st Century Learners Have multicultural awareness and appreciation.  Open to change.  Are equal parts “consumer” and “creator”.  Increasingly aware of the world around them.  Know where to go to find information.  Are better educated than any generation before them.

Unit 4 The Fun They Had Isaac Asimov Written in 1951 for a syndicated newspaper page, 'The Fun They Had' was later published in Fantasy and Science Fiction Magazine.

Margie even wrote about it that night in her diary Margie even wrote about it that night in her diary. On the page headed May 17, 2157, she wrote, "Today, Tommy found a real book!" Margie …was thinking about the old schools they had when her grandfather's grandfather was a little boy. All the kids from the whole neighborhood came, laughing and shouting in the schoolyard, sitting together in the schoolroom, going home together at the end of the day. They learned the same things, so they could help one another on the homework and talk about it. And the teachers were people... The mechanical teacher was flashing on the screen: "When we add the fractions 1/2 and 1/4..." Margie was thinking about how the kids must have loved it in the old days. She was thinking about the fun they had.

Thank you for your attention and Happy 21st century teaching!
