Kinesiology and Athletics Program Review Presentation April 18, 2012

Program Description The Kinesiology and Athletic department is a comprehensive program which offers instruction and degree programs in adaptive physical education, dance, fitness, intercollegiate sports, personal and team activities, and recreation. Brief Description of your program. Who are you? One Slide, 2 minutes

Benchmarks This program offers four degrees: Kinesiology, Physical Education, Recreation, and Sports Medicine; and two certificates: Dance and Fitness Specialist. All of our degrees, with the exception of recreation, have been developed and implemented within the past four years. Recreation has been on the books but has not been taught for several years and has just recently been re-introduced. Our Fitness Specialist program, established in the early 2000’s and is the only program with historical data, has awarded 19 certificates over the past 3 years. The Kinesiology and Athletics department success rate averages 77% as compared to the overall success rate of ARC which is 71%. Our department has added several degrees and certificates in the past 4 years to address changing dynamics requiring transfer and vocational opportunities. To account for the increase in lecture sections specific to degree and certificate programs we have creatively reduced sections in fitness, personal activity, dance and team activity.

Program -- Challenges Elimination of FTE Loss of Full-time Instructors to retirement or death Elimination of adjunct faculty with expertise in activity specific subject matter Lack of permanent classroom/teaching space for the lecture classes for our recently developed certificate and degree programs Equitable use of FTE for off season sport classes to support both minor and major sport programs

Planning Implications Our area would like to expand the degree program to include a “Coaching degree” We would like to add multiple sections of the courses each semester, day and evening, to accommodate our students needs and interest We would like to add another permanent classroom/teaching space for the lecture classes in the program Restore FTE and hire more Full-time faculty to meet the new demands of the department
