AP CSP: Data and Trends

Introduction: The last project you did (Encoding an Experience) was about organizing and structuring digital data to represent complex information by thinking about how something can be encoded in bits. We don’t typically have to break digital data down all the way to bits in order to work with it, but understanding that digital data at its root is just bits gives you insights into working with larger data sets. For the next couple of weeks we will work with real data sets and learn how to use to tools to explore and extract information and knowledge from the data. We will learn to tell stories with data

Think about all the data collected by from these quizzes/surveys These sites collect data from all the users for a long amount of time What can that data tell us?

Data: “People say there is data all around us. What do you think that means? Brainstorm as many examples of data as you can think of.” Who is generating the data? Where is the data being stored or saved? Who owns it? Answer these questions in your journal

Data Facts: People generate data through their own actions, though sometimes they might not be aware of it. Online Surveys , Netflix History, Logging into a School Computer, etc. In most cases Data is stored somewhere else, and by someone else. Tons of data is being gathered by individuals and organizations, which makes the data possible to compute with/on. Some knowledge could be extracted from that data Google can tracked the most popular searched terms on the internet Amazon can recommend products to customers based on their purchase history

Data Stories: Data come from everywhere. In this unit we’ll be looking at lots of data and learning a bit about how to use, manipulate and visualize data with computational tools. In Computer Science we can generate a lot of data simply creating programs but that isn’t necessarily data from people in the real world which can be so much more interesting Data about people and how they act in the real world is hard to capture without just asking them. So that’s what a lot of tools online do. They try to capture people’s responses to things because the data, in aggregate, might contain useful information that could be extracted. That “dumb” online quiz you took is an example These quizzes quizzes ask people to reveal things about themselves, their preferences, likes and dislikes (data). Although silly, some interesting things about people could probably be discovered if the data were analyzed As a class, we’re going to do something similar…

Data Tracker Project: As our first adventure into data, each of you is going to complete a short survey. Surveys are one of the best ways to collect data from people, and they are functionally no different from an online poll, funny quiz, or anything else that asks you for your opinion. We’re going to use our own survey, so that we can collect and see all the data The class will collect data about themselves so that students can see trends and patterns in the class’s behavior over time Start right now https://goo.gl/forms/FoOcx5Tt5g7RA6Zk2

Results: Have students look at the results from the survey and discuss what they notice. What do you notice? What was surprising? What do the results tell you about you and your answers? What other information would you like? What kind of questions would we need to ask to find out more information?

Student Responsibility: You are going to complete this survey every day in class for the next several weeks. By the end, we should have several hundred entries. What do you think we might be able to find out in a few weeks? “Write down one or two hypotheses (predictions) about what we might be able to find out about our class, assuming that everyone fills out this survey every day for a few weeks.” Respond to this in your journal

Our Predictions: What were some of your predictions? Focus on hypotheses that hinge on a relationship between two elements of the data People who get more sleep tend to feel better These prediction will require us to perform some computations on the results to find the answers, or spot other trends or patterns. Maybe more questions, maybe use a different kind of data collection method Over the coming weeks, we’ll collect this data, and over that time, you’ll learn some things about how to process and visualize data like this, so you can see for yourself what kinds of knowledge the data holds.

Finding Trends with Visualization: By collecting the data used for the project we’ll see trends and patterns within our data. Right now we are going to look at another tool which has collected a lot of data about everyone in this room. We’re going to start thinking about how to tell stories with data, what data we need, and how best to use and present it.

Google Trends Activity: Today we are going to work with a tool called Google Trends Trends visualizes data taken from Google search histories all around the world from the past several years. Data trends are used in a variety of fields in order to understand what topics are most popular across the country and world. Medical professionals may use this information to trace an outbreak of the flu. Businesses, media outlets, and advertisers keep a close eye on trending topics in order to understand how potential customers are thinking. Tools like Google Trends allow us to visualize data and enables us to identify, understand, and predict patterns in culture and society at large.

Google Trends Activity: Explore Google Trends to learn how it works and see what you can infer by looking at the trend in data You should find a trend or set of trends they think is particularly interesting or personally relevant and try to tell a story from the data they see a current event / social movement / hashtag / meme your favorite hobby / movie / song / book / celebrity popular apps / businesses / products / websites Complete the activity worksheet What can you honestly conclude? Ex.1 Golden State Warriors, Cleveland Cavaliers ; Ex. 2 Election, Donald Trump, Hillary Election, ISIS

Power of Visualization Tools: It’s exciting to be able to look at so much data in such a concise way (visualization tool). As we start thinking more about how we use data, however, we’ll need to Make sure that the assumptions we’re making about our data are correct. Understand the difference between describing what the data shows and describing why it might be that way Review your answers on the activity guide and revise your stories as needed. This is going to be collected next class
