What is an Oxymoron? An oxymoron is a figure of speech in which contradictory terms appear in conjunction with one another. (Example: Jumbo shrimp)

Origin of the word: mid 17th cent.: from Greek oxumōron, neuter (used as a noun) of oxumōros ‘pointedly foolish,’ from oxus ‘sharp’ + mōros ‘foolish
