SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF AGROFORESTRY SYSTEMS CAETS CONGRESS 2018 SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF AGROFORESTRY SYSTEMS

WHY. “SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AGROFORESTRY SYSTEMS” WHY? “SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AGROFORESTRY SYSTEMS” ? DURING THE LAST DECADES PAPER CONSUMPTION IS DECREASING DRAMATICALLY AND AGROFORESTRY WASTES ARE INCREASING BACKGROUND

BACKGROUND Pulp capacity has dramatically grown in Latin America during the last 20 years, based in Eucalyptus plantations, mainly leaded by Brazil, Chile and lately, uruguayan forestry plantations Most of these forests are grown upon a sustainable basis, certified by international organizations, as FSC Agriculture-based economy also had a sustainable growth, driven by the high demand of soybean ; this has improved the area of agricultural lands in Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay

Why sustainable forestry systems South America: The region is forseen as increasing its area of planted forests from 12,5 million hectares in 2008 to 17,3 million in 2020 Success in PPI in South America is seen as a combination of natural resources advantages, promotional policies and improvement of productivity levels and innovation in forest cultivation and management

PPI in South America Eucalyptus and pine plantations raw material Short rotations Land availability Large scale production Export market oriented

STORA ENSO ARAUCO MONTES DEL PLATA COLONIA

UPM URUGUAY FRAY BENTOS

BACKGROUND Sugar cane and other agricultural productions developed industrial activities including large scale bioethanol based fuel production mainly in Brazil. Worldwide, R&D address biotechnological developments based in lignocellulosic materials , for fuels and biochemicals. This new bioeconomy involves various Engineering areas, as well as academic work

Our challenge Meet important “players” representing full scale, pilot scale experiences and research activities on bioproducts and biofuels In Latin America there are key players in the area of biotechnology. We have already met some of them, located in Uruguay: Biotechnologies developers, as UPM, Stora Enso and Arauco have two new pulpmills (Fray Bentos,Río Negro and Conchillas,Colonia). Andritz, equipment and technology supplier Abengoa also active in this area, has developed bioethanol production (first and second generation) in Brazil, Spain and USA.

Caets 2018 Congress We invite Academies representing countries engaged in private, public and international research projects to join our working group. National Academy of Engineering in Uruguay appointed a Congress Commitee and a Technical Commitee. Academic Engineers Rosario Pou, Carlos Amorin Norberto Cassella and Carlos Vaz Rossell are members of the Technical Commitee.
