Dean of Postgraduate Studies Professor Helen Berry Dean of Postgraduate Studies Hello – Ni Hao (pronounced knee-how) I am Professor Helen Berry and I am the Dean of Postgraduate Studies at Newcastle University. Thank you for joining us for tonight’s event “Turning your UK education into a successful career in China” Particular thanks to our panellists, host and Alumni Committee members – without whom such an event would not be possible. A very warm welcome to all of our alumni of the Business School who join us tonight. It is fantastic to see so many of you here. We hope that you use this event to network with fellow alumni and share experiences, contacts and expertise. It is also a great opportunity for us to keep in touch with you and keep you updated with news from Newcastle. We’d like to extend a further warm welcome to the select group of offer holders who have joined us this evening. We are really pleased that you are thinking of studying at Newcastle University Business School and we hope that you find this event useful. As I’m sure many of you are aware, Newcastle University Business School is in the Top 1% of Business Schools in the world and our diverse and international academic staff are at the forefront of research in their chosen areas of Business studies. We are pleased to announce that this year we have launched our first ever Business Excellence Scholarships for Chinese applicants. Students with a first class degree and who have studied at a high-ranking Chinese University could receive a scholarship of £5000 towards the cost of their tuition fees. Business School staff are on hand to answer any questions you may have about the scholarship, your application or anything else you would like to discuss. We have lots of alumni here this evening who are more than happy to share their experience of studying in Newcastle with you. Please talk to them about what it’s like to live and study in one of the UK’s favourite student cities, and how studying a Master’s degree in the UK has helped them find work back here in China. Update from Newcastle University Business School Director of Business School Triple Accreditation Awards British Academy of Management (BAM) Conference Lifelong Learning Professor John Wilson, left his position of Director of the Business School in December and the School is currently head-hunting a new director. Newcastle University Business School was re-accredited by EQUIS in April 2016.  This accreditation is from the next 3 years and means the School holds its status as a Triple Accredited Business School keeping the School in the top 1% of Business Schools in the world Our Global Experience Opportunity Programme's Regional Internship initiative won the Educate North Employer Engagement Award. The award celebrates and recognises best practice and excellence in the education sector in the North of England. The scheme was also runner-up for THE Awards and Guardian University Awards. Newcastle University Business School was proud to host the 2016 British Academy of Management (BAM) conference in September. Patrick Behar-Courtois, Entrepreneur and Organisational Development Specialist I am delighted to introduce our host for tonight, a much valued member of the Business School’s Shanghai alumni community – completing an MBA at Newcastle University in 2004. Patrick has over 20 years of international performance improvement and change implementation experience, specialising in action and performance coaching, competency based management interventions and technology driven organisational development initiatives. As a leading organisational development expert in Asia Patrick has been part of management and performance change projects for Coca Cola, Accor, Volvo, and the World Health Organisation. Patrick is currently dividing his time between Shanghai and Paris, France - where he is undertaking a PhD researching the impact of culture on managerial and human resources practises.

Module Selection Meeting Gillian Holmes DPD N400/N401 Accounting and Finance Stage 1 → Stage 2

Making your choice Your N400/N401 degree programme is made up of compulsory and optional elements For those of you thinking of going into the accounting profession, there are some option choices you should bear in mind, depending on the accounting body from which you may be seeking exemptions.

Regulations for N400/N401 Stage 2 STAGE 2 COMPULSORY MODULES: ACC2002 Managerial & Business Economics 20 ACC2003 Financial Control 20 ACC2005 Intermediate Financial Accounting 20 ACC2007 Corporate Finance 20 ACC2021 Understanding Company Accounts 20 ACC2002 is microeconomics and it builds on the micro material covered in ECO1017 ACC2003 is management accounting and develops from the material covered by Shanta Davie in ACC1011 ACC2005 is financial accounting and develops from ACC1010 ACC2007 is finance, building on the finance introduced by Dylan Che in ACC1011 These modules offer a number of exemptions from the professional bodies. ACC2021 is a group project where you work together to analyse a company. It is assessed by report and presentation, with the presentation being made to staff from A&F and from the accounting profession (Ernst and Young).

20 credits of options in the Regulations ACC2009 Strategic Business Analysis (ICAEW exemption) 20 ACC2020 Auditing (ACCA & ICAEW exemptions) 20 NCL2007 Career Development for second year students 20 You may take another module from either the Business School or outside (with DPD approval) – subject to pre-requisites The LAW1054 requirement is in the for direct entry students – it probably won’t affect anybody in the session. ACC2009 and ACC2020 are discussed on later slides. NCL2007 is a University module – taken by students from many degree programmes. There is a session this week to tell you about the module (Wednesday 30 April at 4.30 - I don’t know the venue as it’s not on the schedule). In this module students work/volunteer and then do an assessment based around either their place of work; or voluntary role (e.g. treasurer of a union society); or in a school.

Making your choice(s) It’s a good idea to think about what you may wish to take when you are in stage 3: You have 60 credits of options at stage 3 Some stage 3 choices may be governed by what you take at stage 2 In stage 3 you can take up to 20 credits of stage 2 modules that you have not already taken Some students choose Career Development or other modules outside the regulations Students can do career development at stage 3 – either after they’ve done it at stage 2 or for the first time.

Regulations for N400/N401 Stage 3 STAGE 3 COMPULSORY MODULES: ACC3001 Financial Accounting 20 ACC3002 Management Accounting 20 ACC3006 International Financial Management 20 Financial accounting, management accounting and finance are compulsory.

60 credits of options STAGE 3 ACC OPTIONS: ACC3004 Derivative Markets 20 ACC3008 Auditing as Social Accountability 20 (Requires ACC2020) ACC3009 Taxation in Accounting 20 (ACCA, CIMA & ICAEW exemptions) ACC3016 Accounting, Organisations & Society 20 ACC3018 Accounting Change and Development 20 NCL3007 Career Development for Final Year Students 20 (not available if NCL2007 was taken in stage 2) NCL3008 Advanced Career Development 20 2 finance modules, ACC3003 and ACC3004. ACC3008 carries on from ACC2020. ACC3009 is very popular ACC3016 is the dissertation ACC3018 is accounting history Two career development modules, depending on whether students have taken the CDM in year 2.

ACC2020 Auditing Module Leader: Dr Shanta Davie Aim: To enable students to understand what auditing means in the context of professional frameworks: how organisations try to seek audit assurance and how this is reported to the relevant stakeholders within an international context. Audit framework and regulation; Internal audit and corporate governance; Risk assessment and planning of assurance engagements; Gathering audit evidence; assessing and using Internal controls; and Review and reporting Exemptions: ACCA and ICAEW

ACC2009 Strategic Business Analysis Module leader: Gillian Holmes Aims: To enable students to understand how businesses develop and implement strategic choices. To understand and analyse business objectives, market position, and internal and external factors affecting strategic choices. Techniques for evaluating the strategic position of a business, including internal and external factors Scenario analysis, including financial data, to determine strategic choice Change management Exemption: ICAEW

NCL2007 Career Development for Second Year Students Provided by the Careers Service Aims: To develop students who can independently self-manage, proactively interact and ethically apply their knowledge and skills in a work-related context Can to some extent balance work across the semesters. Students will complete a minimum of 70 hours of direct engagement with the organisation hosting the work-related learning spread over at least 10 weeks. Three routes are available: Learning from work; Tutoring and mentoring; Volunteering

What do you need to do? You should have all received an e-mail about the S3P system for on-line selection The portal opens at - 9.00am on Friday 5 May 2017 and closes at 8.00pm on Thursday 11 May 2017 and all choices must be made by the deadline Do you know your password?

Procedure for choosing option modules – within regulations You make your module choice/s using S3P Refer to school web site and emails for help on this Option choices listed in the regulations (ACC2009, ACC2020 or NCL2007) can be made and will go into the timetabling system

Alternative modules If you wish to consider a module or modules outside the regulations, it is up to you to investigate the possibilities: If you are considering an Economics, Management or Marketing module, look at the programmes on the School website, to see the available modules, and possibly attend module choice sessions or meetings Make sure that you have met any pre-requisites The module must have a 2XXX or 1XXX code

Procedure for choosing option modules – not in N400/N401 regulations Register now for an ACC module that is part of your regulations (ACC2020 or ACC2009) In Induction Week (or earlier), check the timetable for BOTH semesters If the module you wish to take has NO clashes with ACC modules then contact your DPD to ask if the module will be approved Go to the Hub (5th Floor of this building) to have the choice entered by a programme administrator
