Classroom Makerspaces Makerspaces on a Classroom Budget is a session where teachers can learn to integrate S.T.E.M. into the classroom. With a focus on Engineering, Makerspaces are a great way to build 21st Century learning skills where students can learn to explore their curiosity, become critical thinkers, and work as collaborative problem solvers. This session will give elementary educators ideas to create a classroom makerspace without spending too much money. Not only will teachers get ideas that they can apply to their classroom instruction, but they will get a chance to create and interact with affordable Makerspace projects. These ideas will help kids: Spark creativity and imagination Stimulate their minds Combat screen time Discourage laziness Promote problem solving Keep their minds active for hours
CHAMPS for our Presentation Conversation Please keep side conversations to a whisper. If you have to take a call, step out into the hallway. Help Questions are strongly encourage. Feel free anytime to stop and ask a question or give a comment. Just give me a signal. Activity We will learn how to engage our students with fun and inexpensive ideas to help them show their inventiveness. Movement Please feel free to move around and interact. If you need to use the restroom, they are right across the hall. Participation We will have a presentation and then time to create at your tables. Success You will leave here with a few ideas of how to stimulate your students with classroom makerspaces.

Importance of S.T.E.M. in Education The S.T.E.M. initiative realigns traditional math and science education making career readiness a priority for all learners. It encourages a 21st century learning environment where students not only have the curiosity to wonder why, but the motivation to discover how. It allows our children to develop a solid foundation in the increasingly complex subject areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. http://www.esc1.net/cms/lib/TX21000366/Centricity/Domain/63/2013%20Fall%20Media%20Conference/2013_Program_Fall_Media_Conference.pdf
Today’s S.T.E.M. focus will be learning about how to be Engineers. Engineering is the science or profession of developing and using nature's power and resources in ways that are useful to people.
Who are engineers? Engineers are people who solve problems and focus on making things work more efficiently and effectively. Engineers apply the theories and principles of science and mathematics to research and develop economical solutions to technical problems.

Organizing a Makerspace Organizing Organization of materials and resources is going to be an essential part of the classroom makerspace. Physical resources require a physical space that is big enough to allow students to work independently or collaboratively. https://jessicagrayschipp.wordpress.com/2014/02/18/color-coded-clean-up-organizing-your-makerspace/

Engineering Ideas for Kids using Makerspaces Make a Catapult Supplies needed 7 craft sticks 4 rubber bands a milk cap cotton balls {or other objects to launch} Directions Stack 5 craft sticks together, and rubber band the ends. Stack 2 craft sticks together, and wrap a rubber band around the very end. Separate the 2 craft sticks. Place the stack of 5 craft sticks between the 2 craft sticks. Wrap a rubber band around all of the craft sticks to hold the catapult together. Glue a milk cap {or something similar} on to serve as a launching platform. Push down on the top craft stick and release to launch an object from the milk cap. Link To Learning – Forces, Motion, Measurement Launch an object from the catapult multiple times and measure how far it travels each time. Launch different objects from the catapult and measure how far each object travels. Compare catapults. Build more than one catapult {the same or different design}. Launch the same object from each catapult and measure how far it travels.

Makerspace Maintenance Teachers will want to teach how to use the Makerspaces by modeling the procedures of how to interact with the maker materials. They will show and direct how to use the materials, what to do with finished products, and how to clean up the Makerspace after it has been used. Teachers should also let the students know that accidents may happen; but they can be avoided with great preparation, procedure practice, and organization. Proper storage will allow the maker material to be reused and to last longer. Teachers can have weekly or monthly trained classroom helpers whose job it is to act as a teacher assistant when students are at the Makerspaces. https://www.edutopia.org/blog/starting-school-makerspace-from-scratch-colleen-graves
Engineer Challenges These ideas will help us: Today, we are going to work in partners to solve some engineering challenges! These ideas will help us: Spark creativity and imagination Stimulate our minds Collaborate with others Promote problem solving
Engineering Challenges Directions Steps To Follow Collaboratively work in pairs to solve the task card. First, identify the problem. Next, discuss how to solve the problem. Thirdly, make a plan to share the workload. Then solve the problem. At the end (when you are done), reflect on how you could solve it differently next time. Partner voice only (Level1) Stay in your assigned seat. Locate materials and establish work space. Use task cards to build & create. Tasks must be shared equally (Everyone gets a turn). Raise your hand if you need help. Pick up materials and neatly organize the items quickly and quietly.
