FORCE – PUSH OR PULL The unit of measurement for force is the Newton (N)

FORCES ACT IN PAIRS BALANCED FORCES – OCCURS WHEN THE FORCES ACTING ON AN OBJECT ARE EQUAL TO EACH OTHER AND THERE IS NO MOVEMENT.

UNBALANCED FORCES – OCCURS WHEN THE FORCES ACTING ON AN OBJECT ARE NOT EQUAL TO EACH OTHER AND THERE IS MOVEMENT.

FRICTION – A FORCE THAT PUSHES AGAINST MOVING OBJECTS.

AIR RESISTANCE – A FORM OF FRICTION THAT EXISTS BETWEEN OBJECTS MOVING THROUGH THE ATMOSPHERE.

GRAVITY – A PULLING FORCE OF ATTRACTION THAT EXIST BETWEEN ANY TWO OBJECTS WITH MASS.

GRAVITY PULLS ALL OBJECTS DOWN AT THE SAME RATE. WITHOUT AIR RESISTANCE WITH AIR RESISTANCE (VACUUM)

WORK – THE ACTION THAT RESULTS WHEN A FORCE CAUSES AN OBJECT TO MOVE IN THE DIRECTION OF THE FORCE. Work = Force x Distance (W=FxD) Joule (J) is the unit of measurement for work

HOW MUCH WORK HAS BEEN DONE IN EACH SITUATION BELOW? W=FxD Ms. Johnson used a force of 10 Newtons to push a box 5 meters across the floor. How much work did she do? ______Joules Mrs. Wit Mal used a force of 100 Newtons to pull a desk 2 meters across the floor. How much work did she do? Mr. Moore used a force of 1,000 Newtons to pull a car 0 meters down the street. How much work did he do?
