Public Relations

What is Public Relations (PR) - Definition Public Relations – the planned and sustained effort to establish and maintain goodwill and mutual understanding between an organisation and its public.

What does Public Relations mean? Public Relations is all about Communication Relationships Reputation Project a positive image of the business to the outside world. This is through the public and publicity Publicity – any free news stories about a business’s products or service

What activities are included as PR? Public Relations Developing good relations with various groups (publics). Example: Generating favorable publicity. Example: Maintaining a level of positive public perception. Example: Enhancing a particular image, innovation, reliability, honesty. Example: Handling or heading off unfavorable stories which could damage image. Example

PR & its Relationship to Business Objectives

4 Ways PR can help Business Objectives PR/Business Objectives Promoting a Positive image – reinforce positive attitudes and perceptions about the business reputation. Enhance feeling of goodwill to the business Effective communication of messages – to convey information using publicity on the business. Enhance the prestige of the business Issues Monitoring – Early warning of public trends which could impact sales. Take action before impact hits Crisis Management – Protect a businesses reputation as a result of negative or unfavorable rumors or publicity

Public Relations IS NOT Advertising! Advertising – is paid space or time on TV, Radio, Newspapers, Outdoor billboards and related to a specific product Public Relations – is used to increase public recognition, opinion or image of the whole business or oganisation. It should be planned, & is often free, involving the use of space, time and a variety of media or activities.
