The United Kingdom Kindred Spirits 1 Samuel 19:1-20:42 Carol Martin

John 16:33: “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart John 16:33: “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

1 Samuel 18:29-30: “Saul became still more afraid of him (David), and he remained his enemy the rest of his days. The Philistine commanders continued to go out to battle, and as often as they did, David met with more success than the rest of Saul’s officers, and his name became well known.”

From Elevation to Exile Jonathan’s intervention (the importance of friends); Michal’s warning (the value of loyalty); Samuel’s ministry (the protection of the Lord); Jonathan’s friendship (the character of hesed love); and David’s covenant (the security of a love relationship).

1. Jonathan’s Intervention: The Importance of Friends 1 Samuel 19:4: “David hasn’t harmed you. The Lord won the victory for Israel and you were glad. Why do wrong and kill an innocent man for no reason?” Friendship is strengthened when it has endured tough times together.

2. Michal’s Warning: The Value of Loyalty 1 Samuel 19:19: “While David was playing the harp, Saul tried to pin him to the wall with his spear, but David eluded him as Saul drove the spear into the wall. That night David made good his escape. ”

Psalm 59: “Deliver me from my enemies, O God; protect me from those who rise up against me. Deliver me from evildoers and save me from bloodthirsty men. See how they lie in wait for me! Fierce men conspire against me for no offense or sin of mine, O Lord.”

Psalm 59: “I have done no wrong, yet they are ready to attack me Psalm 59: “I have done no wrong, yet they are ready to attack me. Arise to help me; look on my plight! O Lord God Almighty, the God of Israel, rouse yourself to punish all the nations; show no mercy to wicked traitors. They return at evening snarling like dogs, and prowl about the city.”

Psalm 59: “See what they spew from their mouths – they spew out words from their lips and say, ‘Who can hear us?’ But you, O Lord, laugh at them; you scoff at all those nations. O my Strength, I watch for you; you, O God, are my fortress, my loving God. God will go before me and will let me gloat over those who slander me.”

Psalm 59: “But do not kill them, O Lord our shield, or my people will forget. In your might make them wander about and bring them down. For the sins of their mouths, for the words of their lips, let them be caught in their pride. For the curses and lies they utter consume them in wrath, consume them till they are no more.”

Psalm 59: “Then it will be known to the ends of the earth that God rules over Jacob. They return at evening, snarling like dogs, and prowl about the city. They wander about for food and howl if not satisfied. But I will sing of your strength, in the morning I will sing of your love; for you are my fortress, my refuge in times of trouble.”

Psalm 59: “O my Strength, I sing praise to you; you, O God, are my fortress, my loving God.”

Even though God does not change, He can bring about big change. 3. Samuel’s Ministry: The Protection of the Lord Even though God does not change, He can bring about big change.

Kindred Spirits Verses Acts 4:32: “All the believers (in Jerusalem) were one in heart and mind.” Romans 15:5: “May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you a spirit of unity among yourselves as you follow Jesus Christ, so that with one heart and mouth you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Kindred Spirits Verses 2 Corinthians 13:11: “Be of one mind.” Philippians 2:2: “Make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose.”

Kindred Spirits Verses Romans 12:10: “Be devoted to one another in brotherly love.” 1 Peter 1:22: “Love one another deeply, with all your hearts.”

1 Samuel 20:34: “Jonathan got up from the table in fierce anger; on that second day of the month he did not eat, because he was grieved at his father’s shameful treatment of David.”

The Security of a Love Relationship 5. David’s Covenant: The Security of a Love Relationship 1 Samuel 20:14-15, 16b: “But show me unfailing kindness like that of the Lord as long as I live, so that I may not be killed, and do not ever cut off your kindness from my family – not even when the Lord has cut off every one of David’s enemies from the face of the earth.”

The Security of a Love Relationship 5. David’s Covenant: The Security of a Love Relationship 1 Samuel 20:14-15, 16b: “But show me unfailing kindness like that of the Lord as long as I live, so that I may not be killed, and do not ever cut off your kindness from my family – not even when the Lord has cut off every one of David’s enemies from the face of the earth. May the Lord call David’s enemies into account.”

The Security of a Love Relationship 5. David’s Covenant: The Security of a Love Relationship 1 Samuel 20:42: ““Jonathan said to David, “Go in peace,” for we have sworn friendship with each other in the name of the Lord saying, ”The Lord is witness between you and me, and between your descendants and my descendants forever.”

First, He brought me here, it is by His will I am in this strait place: in that fact I will rest. Next, He will keep me here in His love, and give me the grace to behave as His child Then, He will make the trial a blessing, teaching me lessons He intends for me to learn, and working in me the grace He means to bestow. Last, in His good time He can bring me out again – how and when He knows. - V. Raymond Edman, “In Quietness & Confidence
