Animal Farm Review Chapters 3 – 4 Explore Chapters 3 – 4 Context, Representations, Setting and Symbolism

Context Context is always important. We need to consider what was happening in society, politics and economics at the time that the novel was written. This will give us more information about the ‘message’ or intended meaning of the novel. Animal Farm was written during the time of the Russian Revolution. The Russian Revolution was the series of events that led from the overthrow of a monarchy to the beginnings of communism. Animal Farm depicts these events through anthropomorphism.

Activity 1 “Workers of the world unite; you have nothing to lose but your chains”. Look at the quote above. What are the major ideas expressed by this quote? How do you think it relates to Animal Farm? Research Karl Marx and Marxism and write a brief description of Marx’s ideology. How would you explain his values and beliefs? What was the catalyst for his ideology?

New Theme: Language and Power

Chapter 3 In the early days of the revolution, what is the mood? What is Boxer’s attitude? What is the result of all the committees that Snowball starts? For the more stupid animals, what slogan does Snowball come up with that contained the essential principles of Animalism? Napoleon is very interested in the education of the young. Of all the baby animals, why do you suppose he took the nine puppies to educate on his own? We are told that Napoleon and Snowball disagree on just about everything. What, however, is the one thing on which they are in full agreement at the end of the chapter?
