General Personal and Lab Safety Practices

General Lab Safety Rules Wear safety glasses at all times “Horse-play”, running and throwing of objects are dangerous practices and forbidden at all times. Tie back long hair No loose clothing: ties, long baggy shirts, etc… No loose jewelry No open-toed shoes (sandals, flip-flops, etc…) Keep floors and table areas clean.

General Lab Safety Rules Don’t be a knob twister; keep hands off of all controls, switches, and knobs unless using the machine. Do not handle projects that do not belong to you Do not bother others when they are working. NEVER “YELL!!” in the shop at any time. All students are to assist in shop clean up. Report all accidents to your instructor.

General Hand Tool Safety Rules Use the correct tool / machine for the job Carry tools with sharp points away from the body. Keep hands and other body parts out of the path of sharp edges. Do not use broken or dull tools. Report any broken or dull tools to your instructor. Always clamp or secure your materials.

General Rule Pay attention to safety demonstrations! Ask questions! Seek help! Do not rely on other students for advice!

General Machine Safety Rules Guards are placed on tools and machines for your safety. Do not alter or remove them! Stand away from machines when they are in use. Do not crowd around any machine in use. Never leave a machine running or unattended under any circumstances. Disconnect the power from any portable tool or power machine when changing a blade, disk, belt, or bit.

General Machine Safety Rules Never operate any machine or tool if you are tired, dizzy, upset, worried, or in a hurry. Never sit or lean on power-machinery Never use a machine until full momentum has been reached. Never talk to a student who is operating a machine. You may distract him, therefore causing him to be injured. Do not use any machines in the lab if your instructor is out of the lab.

General Rule You are responsible for reporting any situation that could cause you to be a hazard to yourself or others. Furthermore, if you know someone is not “in their right mind” you have a moral responsibility to let the instructor know.

General Rules If you see someone violating a safety rule, let them know about it because it’s not only protecting that person, it’s also protecting you as well as the other students in the lab. Try to inform the student as quick as possible. If the student has already begun to make the cut, wait until he/she is finished, then tell the student what the correct way should be or inform your instructor.

Good Safety Practices Protects EVERYONE! BE SAFE!!! Good Safety Practices Protects EVERYONE!
