GOD’S PLAN FOR REDEEMING MAN God’s Eternal Plan for Us As Revealed in the Word Lesson 5: Salvation of the Soul Revised on January 22, 2011

SALVATION OF THE SOUL ARE YOU SAVED? WHEN WERE YOU SAVED? WHAT DID YOU DO TO BE SAVED? Revised on January 22, 2011

JESUS AND OUR SALVATION Do you believe that you’re a sinner and in need of salvation? “As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one…For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:10, 23). “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us” (1 John 1:8). Revised on January 22, 2011

Do you believe that Jesus is the only sacrifice for sins? “For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins. ” (Hebrews 10:4). “But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year” (Hebrews 10:3). Revised on January 22, 2011

“In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure” (Hebrews 10:6). “And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins” (Hebrews 10:11). Revised on January 22, 2011

“Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God “Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second. 10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all” (Hebrews 10:9-10). Revised on January 22, 2011

“But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God; 13 From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool. 14 For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified” (Hebrews 10:12-14). Revised on January 22, 2011

Do you want to be saved by Jesus? “Although he was a Son, he learned obedience through what he suffered; 9 and being made perfect he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him” (Hebrews 5:8, 9). Revised on January 22, 2011

Do you want to be justified by the grace of Jesus? “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; 6 Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior; 7 That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life” (Titus 3:5-7). . Revised on January 22, 2011

Do you want to have eternal life through Jesus? “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23). Revised on January 22, 2011

“WHAT MUST I DO TO BE SAVED?” “And [the jailor] called for lights and rushed in, and trembling with fear he fell down before Paul and Silas, 30 and brought them out and said, "Men, what must I do to be saved?” (Acts 16:30). Revised on January 22, 2011

FAITH IS NECESSARY. Do you believe in God, the Creator of all things? “And without faith it is impossible to please him. For whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him” (Hebrews 11:6). Revised on January 22, 2011

Do you believe that God is Spirit? “God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth” (John 4:24). Revised on January 22, 2011

Do you believe in Jesus, the God who became man? “For the grace of God has appeared for the salvation of all men, 12 training us to renounce irreligion and worldly passions, and to live sober, upright, and godly lives in this world, 13 awaiting our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ” (Titus 2:11-13). Revised on January 22, 2011

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God; 3 all things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men… And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth; we have beheld his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father” (John 1:1-4, 14). Revised on January 22, 2011

“Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form he humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is above every name” (Philippians 2:5-9). Revised on January 22, 2011

Are you willing to do what God commands in His Word? “You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone…. 26 For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so faith apart from works is dead” (James 2:24, 26). Revised on January 22, 2011

“If you love me, you will keep my commandments” (John 14:15). “Although he was a Son, he learned obedience through what he suffered; 9 and being made perfect he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him” (Hebrews 5:8-9). Revised on January 22, 2011

REPENTANCE IS NECESSARY. Are you willing to repent of your sins? “There were some present at that very time who told him of the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. 2 And he answered them, "Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans, because they suffered thus? 3 I tell you, No; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish” (Luke 13:1-3). Revised on January 22, 2011

“Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, ‘Brethren, what shall we do?’ 38 And Peter said to them, ‘Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit” (Acts 2:37-38). Revised on January 22, 2011

CONFESSION OF FAITH IS NECESSARY. Are you willing to confess your faith in God? “Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven” (Matthew 10:32). Revised on January 22, 2011

“For man believes with his heart and so is justified, and he confesses with his lips and so is saved” (Romans 10:10). Revised on January 22, 2011

“And Philip said, If you believe with all your heart, you may “And Philip said, If you believe with all your heart, you may. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God” (Acts 8:37). Revised on January 22, 2011

BAPTISM IS NECESSARY. SPRINKLING IS NOT BAPTISM Baptism, like sprinkling, needs water. “And as they went along the road they came to some water, and the eunuch said, ‘See, here is water! What is to prevent my being baptized?’” (Acts 8:36). Revised on January 22, 2011

But baptism, unlike sprinkling, needs much water! “John also was baptizing at Ae'non near Salem, because there was much water there; and people came and were baptized” (John 3:23). Revised on January 22, 2011

Baptism, unlike sprinkling, needs a going down into the water! “And [the eunuch] commanded the chariot to stop, and they both went down into the water, Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him” (Acts 8:38). Revised on January 22, 2011

Baptism, unlike sprinkling, is pictured as a burial! “We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life” (Romans 6:4). Revised on January 22, 2011

Baptism, unlike sprinkling, needs a going up out of the water! “And when Jesus was baptized, he went up immediately from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and alighting on him” (Matthew 3:16). Revised on January 22, 2011

WHY THE NEED TO BE BAPTIZED? THAT WE MAY PUT ON CHRIST. “For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ” (Galatians 3:27). Revised on January 22, 2011

TO ENTER THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN. “Jesus answered, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God” (John 3:5). Revised on January 22, 2011

TO BE SAVED. “He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned” (Mark 16:16). Revised on January 22, 2011

“Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you” (1 Peter 3:21). Revised on January 22, 2011

FOR REMISSION OF SINS. “And Peter said to them, "Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins’” (Acts 2:38). Revised on January 22, 2011

“And now why do you wait? Rise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on his name” (Acts 22:16). Revised on January 22, 2011
