SPP/FIELDS Quarterly UMN 27 September 2016 Keith Goetz
UMN Activity UMN contract with SwRI is producing good results - at a price Nearly complete Flight hardware assembly is well along All UMN flight hardware is complete and delivered to UCB LNPS1 delivered to I&T at UCB LNPS2 delivered to I&T at UCB TDS delivered to I&T at UCB Integration was successful Final end-to-end calibrations were recently completed with flight preamplifiers Final conformal and such remain
UMN Activity FIELDS slices at UCB (July)
FIELDS2 Activity On-going development of FPGA/VHDL firmware A second flight-like proto-RTAX was burned and tested Corrected serious timing problems in earlier VHDL design EM testing shows the problems was corrected Proto-RTAX was installed in FM and is full functional On-going development of flight software On-going development of ground software
TDS Activity TDS FM is now fully assembled and tested Issues Resolved Screened ADCs were delivered and installed At risk – lot jeopardy – as qualification continues to mid-November Instrument calibration is now complete Stability will be revisited throughout I&T Issues Resolved Circuit Breaker design error (typo) – introduced in FM Corrected, implemented and tested Circuit Breaker mixed voltage – introduced in STEREO V5 Gain error – overlooked in EM testing Non-flight (no PIND testing) AD829 op-amps installed by accident Corrected (replaced) and tested
TDS Status TDS FM is assembled and in I&T at UCB Proto-RTAX has been installed Corrected AEB clock problem revealed in I&T Full end-to-end phase and gain calibrations have been done TDS EM1 used at UCB with SWEAP FM to verify wave particle correlation (WPC) with real particles! TDS EM1 is in normal use in EM stack at UCB Timing compatibility with DFB and MAG instruments demonstrated TDS EM2 is constant use at UMN Continuing development of flight firmware, software and ground software FPGA/VHDL has seen continuous development Working data down-sampling
TDS WPC
LNPS Activity LNPS1/2 FMs are complete and ready for final assembly Instrumented TV conducted on both FM units Verified heat rejection and hot spots Delivered to UCB I&T LNPS1/2 FMs have a tin-whisker issue Magnetic parts have been built with tin-plated cans Mitigations are understood Large scale size Tag plate pins fully solder coated Conformal will be applied effectively to can interiors, exteriors and boards No bare metal - Impedes growth and penetration Voltages/currents will burn whiskers away PMPCB approved – with waiver LNPS1/2 EMs are complete Functional at UMN (1) and UCB (2)
Parts Activity Parts and materials lists are complete As-built parts lists complete De-ratings have been revisited AD7621 ADC is not yet fully approved AD7621 ADC beam testing accomplished at Texas A&M Test write-up complete Commercial PEM qualification is on-going – to mid-November Vendor has not inspired confidence PMPCB suggested long (7d) duration hot test is running at ambient Scope captures of circuit-breaker action will be captured on FM at UMN Waiver for not beam testing implemented circuit breaker is in the works Magnetics tin-whisker issue is resolved PMPCB has approved Mitigations in place Waiver is in the works
Coming Up Flight hardware will return to UMN Final soldering touch-up Final cleaning (ROSE) MIP Staking and conformal Final assembly Flight hardware will be re-tested at UMN Flight RTAX to be burned, assembled, tested and installed in FM TDS Flight PROM to be burned, tested and installed in FM TDS Flight hardware will be re-delivered to UCB – November FIELDS1 and FIELD2 re-I&T at UCB PER FIELDS environmental test program PSR
Financial Activity UMN spending continues within contract plans (thru August) Target CV is $6.7M Spending continues somewhat behind the proposed
