CTAF Procedures Airspace Refresher Proposed Airspace Changes ASC Forum 29 Oct 2016

When to broadcast? CAR 166C requires a pilot to make a broadcast whenever it is reasonably necessary to avoid a collision, or the risk of a collision, with another aircraft at or in the vicinity of a non-controlled aerodrome.

Recommended Broadcasts (Ref: CAAP 166-1(3))

Definition: In the vicinity (Ref Car 166) An aircraft is in the vicinity of a non-controlled aerodrome if it is within: airspace other than controlled airspace; a horizontal distance of 10 NM from the aerodrome (reference point); and a height above the aerodrome (reference point) that could result in conflict with operations at the aerodrome.

Adjacent Aerodromes Edinburgh – military (118.3) Lyndoch – helicopters & LSA (126.7) Roland Flat – LSA, GA, parachuting, models (126.7) CTAF areas overlap Gawler CTAF (126.55) When flying in our area what frequency for broadcasts and listening watch?

Where can we fly? Civilian Class G; Class E (with restrictions) Not in A, C, D without a clearance Military Not in active restricted airspace: CTR, R

Gawler Airspace Refer to Adelaide VNC/VTC Military airspace near Gawler is now activated by NOTAM If there is no NOTAM the airspace is not active Restricted airspace near Gawler is generally active mid-week and inactive on weekends It is each pilot’s responsibility to check the NOTAM before flying

Gawler Releases Portions of Class C (above 4500) Portions of R265A,B,C,D (above 4500) Procedures agreed between ASC, Air Services, Dept of Defence Airspace negotiated weekly

Proposed Airspace Changes Barossa Broadcast Area

OAR Recommendations Defence should reassess the airspace volumes, in particular R265B, by the end 2018 to ensure continued suitability. Where practicable, Defence should continue to pursue options to optimise the use of RAs with a view to disestablishing RAs which are no longer required. The Gawler operators, with the support of Defence, should submit an Airspace Change Proposal to enlarge the western boundary of R233A-B adjacent to the Gawler circuit area and to remove the irregular north-western boundary of R233A-B.
