Opinions After I read the following statements, go stand next to the sign that expresses your viewpoint – either Strongly Agree, Agree, Disagree, or Strongly Disagree

Statements Teenagers are savvy enough to know about the effects of tanning Parents, not legislators, should be responsible for their teenage children’s tanning activities Tanning facilities should warn users about the potential risks of tanning Teenagers, not their parents, should be responsible for their own health decisions

Statements continued Knowing about health risks would not influence teenagers to make responsible decisions The legal age to buy cigarettes should be increased to 21 – the same as alcohol Laws should be implemented in every state that prevents smoking from all public areas

Skin Cancer Information Since 2003, 19+ states have passed laws restricting access to indoor tanning to people under 18 years of age Tanning beds have the equivalent health peril of cigarettes The tanning industry is a $5 billion a year business On an average day, more than 1 million Americans use a tanning salon White women 16 – 49 make up 70% of customers of tanning salons #1. In your opinion, should there be more or less restriction on the use of tanning beds? Explain http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W3np65aByg8

Discussion You do not have to write this down How might a desire for beauty affect decisions you make about your own health? What examples from your own life demonstrate behaviors that place beauty above health? What behaviors might you change if you knew they might have serious, negative long-term effects n your health? What behaviors might you be more reluctant to change? Why? To what degree might you expect others (such as parents, teachers, doctors, & legislators) to protect you against health risks, & how might their actions affect your own sense of personal responsibility?
