Time Management and Organizational Skills How well do you plan?

Organizing “The number of things to be done in a school term is more then you can handle by memory alone. Many people still try to operate that way and they don’t do as well as they could, not because they lack intelligence or drive, but because there disorganized.” (Coe-Brown Northwood Academy)

Why is time management important? Gain time Motivates and Initiates Reduce avoidance Promotes review Eliminates cramming

Goal Setting Specific I will be a starting player next season SMART Goals Specific I will be a starting player next season Measurable I will make 80% of my free throws. Attainable I will practice ever day after school. Realistic I’ll probably never be great at dunking so ill improve my 3-point shooting by 40% Timely I will join a recreational league this weekend.

Prioritizing Category 1 Category 2 The important and urgent things that simply must be done. Take home exams Homework that’s been left until the last minute. Category 2 The important but non-urgent things that should be done. Spending time with family and friends. Reviewing difficult materials with study buddies.

Prioritizing Category 3 Category 4 The unimportant but urgent things that scream to be done. Checking E-mails Various Interruptions Category 4 The unimportant and non-urgent things that will waste time. Too much internet or television.

Planning Every high school student should have a planner/organizer!! Make sure you have your long-term goals written down in your organizer so you can figure out which daily tasks are most important. Use your weekly planner to schedule in the important events – the tests and appointments you can’t avoid Set aside time for the day-to-day tasks that will bring you closer to accomplishing your goals. Make sure you have time left over for the events that unexpectedly come up.

Planning WADE Formula Write it down in your planner. Add it up Estimate how long each task will take. Break large projects down into small parts for easier calculations Decide when you will do each task. If overloaded, you can elect to delete, delay, diminish, or delegate them into shorter tasks. Execute your plan. Put your plan in to action without being held back by procrastination or perfectionism

Organizing A binder is more than a notebook because it allows you to keep ALL your important materials together in one place. Throw away anything useless, but be sure to retain any study sheets and graded material. You will use these later to study for quizzes, tests, and exams. Use colored tabs to keep each subject separated. Keep notes in order they are written.
