DO Now 1) By 1960, America had been involved in the Cold War for 15 years and while tensions had been slowly decreasing during the 1950’s many Americans were still very on edge and were faced with a difficult choice in the election of 1960. Look at the choices below and decide (let’s pretend we can’t just google the answer) who you would pick to lead the country in 1960. Be sure to justify your answer. (Left) Democrat John Fitzgerald Kennedy : A young, rich politician (from a famous political family) with little foreign policy experience (or really any experience). Attractive, great speaker with a lot of strong beliefs (well…at least words) on Civil Rights and poverty. (Right) Rebulican Richard Nixon: Vice President under popular President Eisenhower. Experienced foreign policy expert and congressional war hawk (hard-line anti-communist). Has strong relationships with Soviet leaders as well as the support of the CIA and FBI

The presidential debate that changed Everything: Video Questions 1) Why did TV play such a major role in the election of 1960? Who did it help? Who did it hurt? 2) Why do you think this one debate lead Richard Nixon to have a greater distrust for television and the media? Is it a fair criticism? 3) Just as TV is said to have changed elections forever in 1960, many argue that the election of Barack Obama in 2008 (and exaggerated by the election of Donald Trump in 2016) was forever changed by social media. Cuban Missile Crisis simulation We are going to use historical knowledge to solve one of the biggest crises in American History. To set the scene we will watch about 20 minutes of the movie “13 Days” which will help you understand your important role as a Kennedy advisor during this crisis 1) As an advisor to JFK, you will be presented with multiple perspectives from different advisors in the Kennedy administration. Evaluate each of these perspectives using your prior knowledge of the crisis, and choose 1 or 2 that you believe will ultimately be the right decision 2) Your job is to analyze the evidence and write a memo to Kennedy with your suggestion as to which of the proposed solutions he should take towards the Cuban Missile Crisis. 3) Memo’s due at the end of class. (Homework if not complete) These should be on the paper provided or a separate sheet ( NOT a notebook activity)
