Roanoke #1, continued Raleigh granted a charter in 1584 by Queen Elizabeth I Landed on Outer Bank of present-day North Carolina Envisioned land of sugar and silk plantations Made friends with natives

So what happened? Colony originally referred to as “Virgenia” or “Verginia.” 108 men came to the colony Richard Grenville and Ralph Lane placed in charge Alienated natives and raided villages. Surviving settlers rescued by Francis Drake First Roanoke colony abandoned. Brought back tobacco, potatoes, maize, pumpkins

Roanoke (#2) Raleigh tries again, leader is John White, 115 people Planned to restart the colony on the Chesapeake Bay (VA) For some reason returned to original site and reestablished colony. Hostilities with natives continued. White went back to England for reinforcements Spanish Armada starts towards England Upon their return the colonists were gone completely, homes were dismantled and only one word bore.

Things to think about. Why would people leave their homes? Besides money, what were colonies for? What are the differences between the different colonies?
