Mary Saw the Lord (20:11–18) Who is Mary Magdalene In her confusion, disappointment, Jumped to conclusions Someone stole Jesus body Ran to tell disciples John 20:11–18 (ESV) — 11 But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she stooped to look into the tomb. 12 And she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet. 13 They said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.” 14 Having said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing, but she did not know that it was Jesus. 15 Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.” 16 Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to him in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means Teacher). 17 Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’ ” 18 Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”—and that he had said these things to her.   ~~~Who is Mary Magdalene Luke 8:2 (ESV) … Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, ~~~In her confusion, disappointment, Jumped to conclusions ~~~ Someone stole Jesus body ~~~~~~~Ran to tell disciples

John out ran Peter Peter had not been restored and still wondered Spiritual Energy was low Isaiah 40:31 (ESV) but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint. ~~~Peter had not been restored and still wondered ~~~Spiritual Energy was low   ~~~~~~~Isaiah 40:31 (ESV) — 31 but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.

What did Peter and James see at the tomb Grave clothes Body gone Not the scene of grave robbery Jesus had come to life and passed through the grave clothes John Believed—Physical evidence Peter Wondered—Jesus come to him separately Mark 16:7 (ESV) But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going before you to Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.” ~~~ 1. Grave clothes   ~~~ 2. Body gone ~~~ 3. Not the scene of grave robbery -Would not have removed the grave wrappings -Would not have folded the clothe that wrapped His head. ~~~ 4. Jesus had come to life and passed through the grave clothes ~~~5. John Believed—Physical evidence ~~~~6. Peter Wondered—Jesus come to him separately ~~~~~~~Mark 16:7 (ESV) — 7 But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going before you to Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.”

Disciples disbelieved -- Until Jesus ate in front of them Luke 24:41–49 (ESV) — 41 And while they still disbelieved for joy and were marveling, he said to them, “Have you anything here to eat?... ~~~~~~Luke 24:41–49 (ESV) — 41 And while they still disbelieved for joy and were marveling, he said to them, “Have you anything here to eat?” 42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish, 43 and he took it and ate before them. 44 Then he said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” 45 Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, 46 and said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, 47 and that repentance for the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things. 49 And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”

Three types of proof for spiritual matters Evidence God gives to His world Evidence of God’s Word Evidence of personal Experience They go home without proclaiming Jesus ~~~ Evidence God gives to His world 1) Seasons and days 2) Orderliness of the universe 3) Order in the body 4) Proof of order 5) Protons, neutrons, electrons   ~~~ b. Evidence of God’s Word 1) Faith 2) Oldest, best certified by ancitent manuscripts 3) Ever changing peoples lives 4) Always true ~~~ c. Evidence of personal Experience 1) What has Jesus done for you (Specific) 2) Salvation 3) New life, peace, freedom 4) Shows us how to live in fulfillment ~~~~~~~They go home without proclaiming Jesus

Mere intellectual evidence alone will not change people We must meet Christ Personally ~~~~~~~We must meet Christ Personally

John 20:19–25 (ESV) — 19 On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” 20 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. 21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.” 22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld.” 24 Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe.”   A. Thomas Saw the Lord (20:26–31) Thomas not present at the first meeting How many things are missed by being absent from the local assembly. Thomas saw the Lord and forgot his doubts All demands for truth were met Thomas reaction: My Lord and my God You can have the same assurance and blessing believing without seeing John 20:26–31 (ESV) — 26 Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” 27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.” 28 Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” 29 Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” 30 Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.   ~~~Thomas not present at the first meeting ~~~How many things are missed by being absent from the local assembly. ~~~~Thomas saw the Lord and forgot his doubts All demands for truth were met ~~~Thomas reaction: My Lord and my God ~~~You can have the same assurance and blessing ~~~~~~~~ --believing without seeing

Review: Mary: Issue of her love for Christ Disciples: Issue was their hope. Thomas: Issue was faith. He would not believe unless he saw proof. ~~~Mary: issue of her love for Christ-Missed him and wanted to care for His body   ~~~Disciples: Issue was their hope. a. All hope was gone b. They were locked in a room c. Huddled together in fear ~~~Thomas: Issue was faith. ~~~~~~He would not believe unless he saw proof.

Because Jesus Christ is alive today, our faith is secure. 1 Corinthians 15:17 (ESV) And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. 1 Corinthians 15:19 (ESV) If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied. ~~~1 Corinthians 15:17 (ESV) And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. ~~~1 Corinthians 15:19 (ESV) If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied.
