Presentation transcript:

John 20 19 It was still the first day of the week. That evening, while the disciples were behind closed doors because they were afraid of the Jewish authorities, Jesus came and stood among them. He said, “Peace be with you.” 20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. When the disciples saw the Lord, they were filled with joy. 21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father sent me, so I am sending you.”

John 20 22 Then he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive anyone's sins, they are forgiven; if you don't forgive them, they aren't forgiven.” 24 Thomas, the one called Didymus, one of the Twelve, wasn't with the disciples when Jesus came. 25 The other disciples told him, “We've seen the Lord!” But he replied, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands, put my finger in the wounds left by the nails, and put my hand into his side, I won't believe.”

John 20 26 After eight days his disciples were again in a house and Thomas was with them. Even though the doors were locked, Jesus entered and stood among them. He said, “Peace be with you.” 27 Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here. Look at my hands. Put your hand into my side. No more disbelief. Believe!"  Thomas responded to Jesus, “My Lord and my God!”

John 20 29 Jesus replied, “Do you believe because you see me? Happy are those who don't see and yet believe.” 30 Then Jesus did many other miraculous signs in his disciples' presence, signs that aren't recorded in this scroll. 31 But these things are written so that you will believe that Jesus is the Christ, God's Son, and that believing, you will have life in his name.

Honest Thomas

John 11 7 Jesus said to his disciples, “Let's return to Judea again.” 8 The disciples replied, "Rabbi, the Jewish opposition wants to stone you, but you want to go back?”…  11 He continued, "Our friend Lazarus is sleeping, but I am going in order to wake him up.” 12 The disciples said, "Lord, if he's sleeping, he will get well." 13 They thought Jesus meant that Lazarus was in a deep sleep, but Jesus had spoken about Lazarus' death.

John 11 14 Jesus told them plainly, "Lazarus has died. 15For your sakes, I'm glad I wasn't there so that you can believe. Let's go to him.”  Then Thomas (the one called Didymus) said to the other disciples, “Let us go too so that we may die with Jesus.”

John 14 3 “When I go to prepare a place for you, I will return and take you to be with me so that where I am you will be too. 4You know the way to the place I'm going.” 5 Thomas asked, “Lord, we don't know where you are going. How can we know the way?” 6 Jesus answered, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

Unbelieving Thomas

Wounded Thomas

John 20 (The Message) Jesus repeated his greeting: “Peace to you. Just as the Father sent me, I send you.” Then he took a deep breath and breathed into them. “Receive the Holy Spirit,” he said. ”If you forgive someone's sins, they're gone for good. If you don't forgive sins, what are you going to do with them?” Eight days later, his disciples were again in the room. This time Thomas was with them.

John 20 (The Message) Jesus came through the locked doors, stood among them, and said, "Peace to you."  Then he focused his attention on Thomas. "Take your finger and examine my hands. Take your hand and stick it in my side. Don't be unbelieving. Believe."  Thomas said, "My Lord! My God!“

John 20 (The Message) Jesus said, "So, you believe because you've seen with your own eyes. Even better blessings are in store for those who believe without seeing."  Jesus provided far more God-revealing signs than are written down in this book. These are written down so you will believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and in the act of believing, have real and eternal life in the way he personally revealed it.
