College Readiness Cherokee Trail High school advanced placement, CONCURRENT ENROLLMENT & International baccalaureate

The Basics Advanced Placement These courses are college-level courses offered in high school. At the end of course, students take AP Exams. Students who do well on AP Exams can earn credit and/or placement into advanced courses in college depending on their college of choice and their score. International Baccalaureate This program requires students to take six college-level courses in high school, take a Theory of Knowledge course, complete 150 hours of community service, and write and Extended Essay. At the end of individual courses, students take IB Exams; those who do well can earn college credit. The IB Program intends to round students not just academically but as world citizens. Concurrent Enrollment These courses are college-level courses offered concurrently with the Community College of Aurora. A grade of C or better provides credit without an external exam and is transferrable to most state schools in Colorado.

The Benefits of AP and IB Courses AP/IB courses can be challenging, but it’s work that pays off. AP/IB courses are often the most interesting and fulfilling courses a student takes in high school. AP/IB teachers are among the most prepared, dedicated, and inspiring teachers at their schools. Students develop confidence, and learn the study habits and time management skills essential for success in college.

AP/IB and College Admission Colleges rank “Grades in college prep courses” and “Strength of curriculum” as the top two factors in the admission decision. 2009 State of College Admission, NACAA

What Are AP/IB Courses Like? AP/IB courses typically demand more of students than regular or honors courses. Classes tend to be fast-paced and cover more material than typical high school classes. More time, inside and outside of the classroom, is required to complete lessons, assignments and homework. AP/IB teachers expect their students to think critically, analyze and synthesize facts and data, weigh competing perspectives, and write clearly and persuasively.

AP Exams AP Exams are administered by schools worldwide on set dates each May. Exams usually last around three hours. Each AP Exam contains: Multiple-choice questions Free-response questions (essay, problem-solving, oral response)

IB Exams IB Exams are administered by schools worldwide on set dates each May. Exams usually last around one-three hours. Each IB Exam contains: Multiple-choice questions (certain subjects only) Free-response questions (essay, problem-solving, oral response)

AP & IB Exam Fees AP Exam fee for 2017 is $95 per exam. IB Exam fees: For students with financial need, the College Board provides a $22 per exam fee reduction. (Must submit a free and/or reduced letter in order to receive the fee reduction) IB Exam fees: Registration Fee: $168 (on-time fee) Exam Fee: $116 (per exam) So…a senior taking six exams would pay $864 But…do you know how much it costs for a year to college at the University of Colorado?

Why Take AP/IB Exams? Most two- and four-year colleges and universities in the United States offer credit or advanced placement for qualifying AP/IB Exam scores. Each university determines the amount of credit awarded or placement. Credit: Students earn credit toward their college degrees dependent on the score earned Placement: Students can skip introductory courses and move directly into higher-level classes, and/or fulfill general education requirements.

College Readiness to… College Admission Jay Mathews, Washington Post Staff Writer On one wall of my cubicle is a large chart extracted from Tom Luce and Lee Thompson's 2005 book "Do What Works: How Proven Practices Can Improve America's Public Schools." It shows that a study of 78,000 Texas students found college graduation rates much higher for those who, while in high school, took Advanced Placement exams - - but failed them -- than those who took no AP exams at all.

College Readiness to… College Admission Michigan State University, Pamela Horne, Assistant to the Provost for Enrollment and Director of Admissions, “My eyes light up when I see ‘International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme’ on a transcript. Students who apply to Michigan State University with IB credentials are assumed to be mature, curious, and creative. They have proven to be successful in a rigorous program that is both broad and deep in its content and intellectual challenge. On campus, IB graduates move with ease in a diverse and global university that demands intercultural skill and adaptability. The challenge of completing an IB diploma means that a student has engaged in the kind of rigorous work that is likely to help them become not just an outstanding college student and citizen of the world, but an exceptional one.”
