How do you come up with a PICOT question? Week XX

Sources for ideas?? Your clinical experience is likely the best guide. Why does X always happen in that patient group when they are being treated? My preceptors treat X disease in very different ways. What’s the best way to treat X? Personal reasons My father is going to have surgery. What is the best approach for conducting the surgery? My child is depressed. What’s the best treatment?

Sources for ideas (contd.) Chat with colleagues about burning clinical questions or clinical dilemmas. Read professional journals! Join list serves for clinical updates See examples on next 3 slides of controversial issues or new research being posted Examples like that may spark an interest but you will need to determine that an adequate number of empirical articles appear!

From Medscape . . . Mediterranean diet may help slow aging Vitamin D reduces COPD exacerbations Mindfulness group therapy = to CBT for depression Diabetes pts with mild CAD at risk Evidence mounts for benefits of 3D mamos Rehospitalization rates highest for poorest neighborhoods Vitamin D predicts cognitive decline Severe acne in teens linked to increased risk for endometriosis

From Medscape . . . Alzheimer’s drug may curb binge eating 1 in 5 w/ T2 diabetes nonresponsive to exercise Symptom burden best predictor of concussion recovery Obestity rate highest in teens with disabilities Hypertension linked to low semen quality Cataracts from statins? Resident duty hour limits haven’t improved pt safety OK to delay repeat bone test for women with normal density No Increase in Risky Sexual Activity With HPV Vaccine

Once you think you have a PICOT question . . . Do a brief lit search to see what is there. Your capstone can’t address a question where there is no (or little) information. Need a minimum of 7 articles that meet your criteria
